About the coach

The coaching career of Yuan Weimin

Yuan Weimin is a Chinese former volleyball coach and sports administrator who led the women’s national team during the beginning of China’s first great international championship era. Born in Suzhou, Jiangsu, in 1939, Yuan played for China before moving into coaching. His national-team work emphasized coordinated team play, ball control and fast offensive organization, creating the structure around a group that included Lang Ping and other players who became central figures in Chinese sporting history.

China won the 1981 FIVB World Cup and the 1982 FIVB Women’s World Championship under Yuan, then captured Olympic gold at Los Angeles 1984. Those three championships established China as a global women’s volleyball power and began the famous sequence of five consecutive world-level titles completed later in the decade under subsequent leadership. Yuan’s career then moved from coaching into senior sports administration. He held major positions within Chinese sport and Asian volleyball, including leadership roles connected to the Chinese Olympic movement and the Asian Volleyball Confederation. That transition broadened his impact from one national team to the institutions governing high-performance sport. Yuan was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2007. His coaching legacy remains closely tied to the disciplined, coordinated style of the early-1980s Chinese women and to the transformation of that team from contender into world champion.
