About the coach

The coaching career of Bebeto de Freitas

Bebeto de Freitas was a Brazilian volleyball coach, former international player and sports executive whose career connected major eras of Brazilian and Italian men’s volleyball. Born Paulo Roberto de Freitas in 1950, he represented Brazil as a player at the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games before moving into coaching. His first defining national-team period came with Brazil, where he helped shape the generation that reached the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic final and won the silver medal.

Bebeto later built an equally important chapter in Italy. As head coach of the Italian men’s national team in the late 1990s, he led a mature program through another successful cycle that included the 1997 World League title and the 1998 FIVB World Championship. His career also included club coaching and senior management work outside volleyball, reflecting an unusually broad sports background. What distinguishes Bebeto’s volleyball legacy is the ability to contribute at elite level in two different national systems: Brazil during its emergence as a modern men’s power and Italy during the continuation of its 1990s international dominance. He died in 2018. The International Volleyball Hall of Fame inducted him in 2015, recognizing both his coaching achievements and his wider contribution to the sport across countries and roles.
