Marv Dunphy is an American volleyball coach whose international career is defined by the United States men’s dominant run in the second half of the 1980s. Dunphy took charge of the national team in 1985 and inherited an Olympic champion, but his tenure was more than a continuation of the previous cycle. The United States won the 1985 World Cup, the 1986 FIVB World Championship and the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games under his direction, completing an extraordinary sequence of major international titles.
Dunphy’s broader career was centered at Pepperdine University, where he coached men’s volleyball across several decades and built one of the sport’s most durable NCAA programs. He also remained involved with USA Volleyball in later Olympic cycles, including staff roles that connected different generations of American national-team coaches. His coaching identity has often been linked to detailed preparation, competitive clarity and the ability to manage experienced teams without reducing the game to rigid formulas. That made him influential beyond his own results: many players and coaches who worked within the U.S. system encountered concepts shaped by his teams. Dunphy was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1994. His legacy therefore combines a concentrated period of international dominance with a much longer contribution to college volleyball and coach development in the United States.
