About the coach

The coaching career of Marco Bonitta

Marco Bonitta is an Italian volleyball coach whose career has crossed women’s and men’s volleyball at both national-team and club level. In 2026 he is head coach of Essence Hotels Fano, the men’s team of Virtus Volley Fano competing in Italy’s Serie A2. Bonitta took over the project during the 2025–26 season and remained in charge for 2026–27, giving an experienced international coach responsibility for a club pursuing promotion from Italy’s second tier. He also worked with Egypt’s men’s national team during the 2025 international season.

Bonitta is best known for his two periods with Italy’s women’s national team. During his first tenure he led Italy to the 2002 FIVB World Championship title, the first world championship won by the Italian women. He later returned to the national program for the Rio 2016 Olympic cycle. Between and around those assignments, Bonitta coached leading clubs in Italy and abroad, including Bergamo, Ravenna and Polish women’s teams, while also working extensively in youth and development structures. The Fano job reflects a recurring feature of his career: willingness to move between categories, genders and competitive levels rather than remaining only in top-flight women’s volleyball. His profile is therefore anchored by the 2002 world title but extends across decades of technical work in different parts of the professional game.
