About the team

Netherlands Men’s National Volleyball Team on the international stage

The Netherlands owns one of European volleyball’s most distinctive championship records: Olympic gold in Atlanta, a World League title won against Italy in Rotterdam and the European Championship crown captured on home soil in 1997. Ron Zwerver, Peter Blangé, Bas van de Goor and their teammates made the Dutch men one of the defining international teams of the 1990s.

The 2026 team looks very different. Joel Banks is working with a substantially younger selection after the Netherlands finished last in the 2025 Volleyball Nations League and lost its place in the competition. Setter Joris Berkhout became captain, Sil Meijs assumed a larger scoring role, and players such as Tom Koops, Yannick Bak, Siebe Korenblek and Alek Aleksov received responsibilities that had previously belonged to a more established generation. The first stage of that rebuild produced European League silver; EuroVolley was much harsher, ending with five defeats from five pool matches.

Banks remains head coach after Nevobo extended his contract in September 2026. The federation framed the extension around development of the new generation and a longer-term project that includes returning the Netherlands to the VNL. Berkhout, previously part of the setter rotation, was named captain in May 2026, succeeding Wessel Keemink.

The current ranking snapshot places the Netherlands at No. 23 with 171.34 points. The official Volleyball World ranking page remains the authoritative live source and should be checked again whenever the profile is materially updated.

National Team History

The Dutch men have competed internationally since 1948 and finished sixth at the first European Championship they entered. For several decades, the Netherlands regularly reached major competitions without establishing itself as a consistent medal contender. That changed dramatically from the late 1980s onward.

A centralized national-team project helped produce the generation that would define Dutch volleyball. Ron Zwerver became one of the leading outside hitters in the world, Peter Blangé directed the offense at setter, and a group including Bas van de Goor, Jan Posthuma, Olof van der Meulen, Guido Görtzen and Richard Schuil gave the Netherlands unusual continuity through several championship cycles.

The first major breakthrough came at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where the Netherlands reached the final and won silver. Brazil took gold, but the medal established the Dutch among the world’s leading teams.

Italy then became the opponent around which much of the era was defined. The Netherlands lost the EuroVolley final to Italy in 1993, the World Championship final in 1994 and another European final in 1995.

The answer came in 1996.

Playing the World League Final Round at Rotterdam Ahoy, the Netherlands defeated Italy 3–2 in the championship match to win its only World League title. A few weeks later, the teams met again in the Olympic final in Atlanta.

This time the prize was Olympic gold.

The Netherlands won another five-set match and became Olympic champion, completing the most important achievement in the history of the men’s program.

One year later, the Netherlands hosted EuroVolley and defeated Yugoslavia 3–1 in the final in Eindhoven. The 1997 title remains the country’s only European Championship gold medal.

The team continued to qualify for major events after that golden period, including the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, but the medal sequence ended. The Netherlands later went through periods outside the World Championship and the highest annual global competition before rebuilding again during the 2010s.

Eighth place at the 2018 World Championship was one of the strongest later results. The team then entered the VNL era with Nimir Abdel-Aziz increasingly central to the offense.

Olympic History

The Netherlands has appeared in the men’s Olympic volleyball tournament five times.

Olympic GamesResult
Tokyo 19648th
Seoul 19885th
Barcelona 1992Silver
Atlanta 1996Gold
Athens 20049th

The 1992 and 1996 tournaments form the core of the Olympic record. Barcelona delivered the first medal; Atlanta delivered the title.

The Netherlands has not returned to the men’s Olympic tournament since Athens 2004. That long absence gives the current LA28 cycle additional significance.

Poland took Europe’s direct Los Angeles 2028 place by winning EuroVolley 2026. The Netherlands therefore must pursue the remaining global and ranking routes.

World Championship History

The Netherlands first appeared at the World Championship in 1949 and spent much of its early history in the middle or lower part of the standings.

The breakthrough came during the great 1990s generation.

After finishing seventh in 1990, the Netherlands reached the 1994 World Championship final. Italy defeated the Dutch in the title match, leaving the Netherlands with silver — still its best World Championship result.

The national team finished sixth four years later in 1998 and ninth in 2002 before a long absence from the tournament.

The return in 2018 was impressive. The Netherlands finished eighth after recording several important victories during a tournament that re-established the team at world-championship level.

Tenth place followed in 2022.

2025 World Championship

The Netherlands entered the 2025 tournament under Joel Banks and advanced from Pool B behind Poland. Wins over Qatar and Romania gave the Dutch a 2–1 record and six standings points.

Türkiye awaited in the Round of 16.

The Netherlands won a long opening set 29–27 but could not maintain control. Türkiye took the next three sets 25–23, 25–16 and 25–19 to win 3–1 and end the Dutch campaign.

The Netherlands finished 13th overall.

The tournament also represented the beginning of a deeper personnel transition. Eight members of the 14-player World Championship roster were making their debut at the event, while Gijs Jorna returned to the national team and captained the squad for that competition. His captaincy belongs specifically to the 2025 World Championship period; Berkhout took over the current role in 2026.

Beginning in 2027, FIVB is renaming the championship the FIVB Volleyball World Cup. The competition in Poland continues the World Championship lineage rather than beginning an unrelated historical tournament.

Netherlands in the Volleyball Nations League

The Netherlands entered the VNL in 2021 and initially made steady progress.

The team placed 14th in its first season and climbed to eighth in 2022, its best VNL finish. Tenth place followed in 2023 and 13th in 2024.

Nimir Abdel-Aziz was central to much of that period. His high-volume scoring from the opposite position gave the Netherlands a clear attacking reference and helped the team remain competitive against opponents with deeper overall rosters.

The 2025 season moved sharply in the other direction.

The Netherlands finished 18th with one victory and 11 defeats, collecting five standings points with an 11–34 set record. Under the competition rules in place at the time, the result cost the team its VNL position.

Belgium subsequently entered the competition as the highest-ranked eligible national team outside the field.

The Netherlands therefore did not play in the VNL in 2026.

Returning has become one of the central competitive objectives of Banks’s rebuild. Because access now depends heavily on the FIVB World Ranking, results in the European League, EuroVolley and other ranking competitions carry consequences beyond the tournaments themselves.

The 2026 European League Rebuild

The 2026 European League was the first full competition built around Banks’s younger group.

A 24-player longlist emphasized players who needed international experience. Established names including Nimir Abdel-Aziz, Wessel Keemink, Michiel Ahyi, Luuc van der Ent and Ewoud Gommans remained within the broader national-team picture, but several were unavailable for the opening competition phase.

Berkhout became captain as the younger team took control of the summer program.

The first results were emphatic.

The Netherlands completed the six-match league round with six victories and no sets lost, defeating North Macedonia, Luxembourg, Georgia, Slovakia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina by 3–0 scorelines.

Israel provided a more difficult semifinal. The Netherlands won both matches 3–1 to reach the final and, by reaching the European League semifinals, also secured qualification for EuroVolley 2028.

Finland stopped the unbeaten run.

The Finns won both final legs 3–1, first at home and then in The Hague. The Netherlands therefore finished with European League silver, adding another podium result to a competition it had previously won in 2006 and 2012.

The tournament was encouraging because of the number of young players involved. It did not, however, prove that the new group was immediately ready for the stronger level it would meet at EuroVolley.

EuroVolley

The Netherlands has one of the deeper European Championship histories outside the continent’s small group of perennial medal nations.

The five-medal peak came across nine years:

EuroVolleyResult
1989Bronze
1991Bronze
1993Silver
1995Silver
1997Gold

The 1997 championship in Eindhoven remains the high point.

In the modern era, the Netherlands reached the quarterfinals in both 2021 and 2023, finishing fifth on each occasion. Serbia ended the 2021 run, while Italy survived a five-set quarterfinal in 2023.

EuroVolley 2026

Banks selected a substantially changed 14-player squad for the championship in Finland.

Eight of the 14 had not been part of the Dutch EuroVolley roster three years earlier. Fabian Plak, with more than 220 internationals, was the oldest and most experienced player in the group at only 29.

The tournament began with a 3–1 loss to Belgium and deteriorated further with a 3–0 defeat against Denmark.

The Netherlands responded much better against Serbia. Berkhout’s team won the first two sets and came within a few points of completing the upset, but Serbia survived the third 30–28, won the fourth 25–15 and took the tie-break 17–15.

Another five-set match followed against host Finland. The Netherlands led 2–1 but lost the fourth and fifth sets, ending its mathematical chance of reaching the Round of 16.

Estonia then won the final pool match 3–1.

The Netherlands therefore left EuroVolley with a 0–5 record, two standings points and a 6–15 set record.

Banks’s post-tournament assessment focused on the experience gap within the new team. He pointed to stronger passages against Serbia and Finland but also to the difficulty of maintaining the required mental and technical level across five matches in six days. The federation’s own review described the championship as a major learning experience for a group in which many players were handling senior European Championship responsibility for the first time.

2026 Current National Team Pool

Volleybal.nl currently lists the following 30-player senior national-team group. This broad federation-maintained selection is the canonical current pool and should not be replaced by the 24-player European League longlist or the 14-player EuroVolley squad.

The breadth of the list matters. Nimir remains part of the national-team pool even though he was not selected for EuroVolley 2026, while several younger players used heavily by Banks remain alongside experienced internationals such as Keemink, Ahyi and Gommans.

The pool therefore represents options available to the program rather than one permanent match roster.

EuroVolley 2026 Squad

The final EuroVolley selection was competition-specific:

This 14-player squad should remain attached to EuroVolley 2026 rather than overwrite the broader 30-player national-team pool.

The federation’s current team page lists Banks and this staff group for the active national-team program.

Banks’s project is explicitly developmental. Nevobo extended his contract after the 2026 summer, citing the generational transition and the need to build a new foundation rather than simply restore the previous lineup. The immediate competitive objective is to climb back toward VNL level; the broader horizon extends beyond one tournament cycle.

Playing Identity & Team Style

The current Netherlands cannot simply be described through the offensive structure used during the Nimir-centered VNL years.

Berkhout is now the captain and one of the key setters in the younger group. Sil Meijs, a 204 cm opposite, handled much of the terminal attacking responsibility during the 2026 competitions, while the outside-hitter rotation of Koops, Bak, Tuinstra and Ebbelaar gave Banks several different receiving and attacking combinations.

The middle offers unusual height. Korenblek stands 215 cm, while Wiltenburg is 205 cm and the wider pool includes Luuc van der Ent at 208 cm, Thom van der Ent at 214 cm and Lars Ent at 207 cm.

During the European League, that physical profile combined with controlled serving and low error numbers. The Netherlands went six matches without losing a set, and Banks was able to rotate younger players without losing the basic structure of the side.

EuroVolley exposed the limits more clearly.

Against Serbia and Finland, the Netherlands showed that it could play extended stretches at a strong European level. It took both opponents to five sets and held a 2–0 lead over Serbia. Yet the group struggled to maintain the same execution through late-set pressure and over a compressed tournament schedule.

Banks identified mental resilience, game understanding and technical execution as areas that still require development. That assessment is more useful than attaching a permanent stylistic label to such a young team.

The attacking structure may also evolve again if established players from the wider 30-man pool return. Nimir remains one of the most accomplished Dutch scorers of the modern era, while Ahyi and Keemink provide senior international experience at opposite and setter.

For now, the 2026 selection is best understood as a tall, developing side trying to combine service and blocking pressure with a more stable first contact and better decision-making in difficult phases.

The concentration of medals between 1989 and 1998 explains why the 1990s remain the historical reference point for Dutch men’s volleyball. Olympic gold, World League gold and the European title were achieved within less than 18 months between 1996 and 1997.

Zwerver, Blangé and Van de Goor remain inseparable from the team’s greatest period. Their generation turned repeated near-misses against Italy into the World League and Olympic titles in 1996, followed by European gold one year later.

The modern team is still deciding which players will fill comparable leadership roles over the longer term. Berkhout’s appointment as captain and Meijs’s increased attacking responsibility are two of the clearest changes so far.

Rivalries & Key Matchups

Italy is the defining opponent in Dutch men’s volleyball history.

The countries met repeatedly during the 1990s when both were among the world’s strongest teams. Italy defeated the Netherlands in the 1993 and 1995 European Championship finals and in the 1994 World Championship final.

The Netherlands finally turned the rivalry in 1996, beating Italy in both the World League final and Olympic final — each in five sets.

Those matches form a substantial part of the identity of the championship generation.

In the modern period, Italy again ended a Dutch EuroVolley run in a five-set quarterfinal in 2023.

Belgium has a different significance. The neighboring programs now occupy a similar competitive space, but their recent trajectories have diverged. Belgium entered the VNL in 2026 just as the Netherlands dropped out, and Belgium beat the Dutch 3–1 in the opening match of EuroVolley.

Finland became particularly relevant in 2026. The Finns beat the Netherlands in both legs of the European League final and then came from 2–1 down to win their EuroVolley pool match in five sets. Those meetings illustrated the difference between Dutch dominance against the European League’s earlier opposition and the consistency required against stronger European teams.

Qualification Path & Tournament Cycle

The Netherlands did not qualify directly for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup through EuroVolley.

Poland was already guaranteed a place as the tournament host. France, Finland and Slovenia therefore took the three European continental qualification places awarded through EuroVolley 2026.

The Dutch group-stage exit moved the Netherlands into the ranking pathway.

After completion of the continental championships, 17 of the 32 men’s teams had secured World Cup places. The remaining 15 berths are distributed through the FIVB World Ranking among teams that have not already qualified.

At No. 23 in the October 1 ranking snapshot, the Netherlands sits inside the provisional ranking-allocation group once teams already qualified through other routes are removed. That is a strong position, but it is not the same as formal qualification. The complete 32-team field should be considered definitive only after FIVB confirms it.

Los Angeles 2028

The Netherlands did not secure Europe’s direct Olympic place. Poland won EuroVolley 2026 and took that quota.

Three further men’s Olympic places will be available at the 2027 global championship for the highest-finishing eligible teams that have not already qualified.

The final three places will then be awarded according to the FIVB World Ranking after the 2028 VNL preliminary phase.

The Netherlands therefore needs both ranking stability and access to high-value matches during the next cycle. Returning to the VNL would improve the opportunities available to accumulate ranking points before the final Olympic allocation.

One future continental ticket is already secured: the Netherlands qualified for EuroVolley 2028 by reaching the 2026 European League semifinals.

Current Status

The Netherlands ends 2026 in a more fragile competitive position than its European League summer initially suggested.

The first phase of Banks’s rebuild was excellent. Six straight 3–0 victories in the European League were followed by two semifinal wins over Israel. Finland was the only team to beat the Netherlands in that competition, and the Dutch finished with silver.

EuroVolley changed the picture.

Five defeats in six days exposed the difference between success against European League opposition and the pressure of a stronger championship pool. Belgium and Denmark controlled the first two matches; the Netherlands then produced better volleyball against Serbia and Finland without converting either five-set contest into a win. Estonia completed the tournament with another 3–1 defeat.

The ranking consequences matter. The Netherlands is now No. 23, close enough to the edge of the 2027 World Cup ranking allocation that the next official results will remain important.

At the same time, the federation has deliberately kept a much broader senior pool than the EuroVolley squad. Nimir Abdel-Aziz, Wessel Keemink, Luuc van der Ent and other established internationals remain listed alongside the new generation.

That gives Banks options rather than forcing an irreversible break with the previous team.

The priorities for the next cycle are clear: secure the ranking-based World Cup place formally, develop the younger players who received major responsibility in 2026, restore enough ranking strength to re-enter the VNL and create a realistic route back to the Olympics for the first time since 2004.
