Player Overview

About Mathijs Desmet

Mathijs Desmet is a retired Belgian outside hitter who spent six senior seasons with Knack Volley Roeselare and also played in Italy’s SuperLega with Pallavolo Padova and Poland’s PlusLiga with Cuprum Stilon Gorzów. Born in Roeselare on January 28, 2000, the 198 cm attacker represented Belgium at senior level from 2019 until stepping away from the national team in 2026. His career included two Belgian championships, four Belgian Cups and a World Championship quarterfinal with the Red Dragons.

Desmet returned to Roeselare for the 2025/26 season after three years abroad, but the homecoming became the final season of his professional career. In February 2026, he announced that persistent ankle problems following an injury in 2023 and two subsequent operations would force him to stop playing professionally at age 26. He helped Knack win the BeNe Cup and BeNe Conference before the season ended, then also withdrew from Belgium’s national-team program ahead of the 2026 Volleyball Nations League.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Desmet grew up in Roeselare, a city closely associated with one of Belgium’s leading volleyball clubs. Volleyball was not his first sport. As a child he initially played football, but a combination of circumstances — including a football environment heavily focused on running and the influence of his father Bart, who had played volleyball for Knack Roeselare’s second team — pushed him toward volleyball at around ten years old.

His development accelerated quickly. At 14, Desmet received an invitation to Topsportschool Vilvoorde, Belgium’s elite volleyball school. During his final year there, he was already being allowed to take part in selected training sessions with Knack’s professional squad in Roeselare.

He graduated into the senior team before turning 18, signing for Knack for the 2017/18 season. That transition made him one of the club’s own youth products to progress all the way from the development structure into the first team.

Desmet was also part of Belgium’s youth national-team system. CEV records place him in U18/U19 and U20 competition before his senior international career began, giving him experience against international opposition while he was still establishing himself at club level.

First Spell with Knack Volley Roeselare

Desmet joined Knack’s senior roster in 2017 and remained with the club for five consecutive seasons. His role grew gradually under Emile Rousseaux and later Steven Vanmedegael, taking him from a teenage prospect into a regular outside hitter on a team competing for Belgian titles and in the CEV Champions League.

A defining performance came in February 2021 against Leo Shoes Modena in the Champions League. Desmet started as Knack won 3–0 in Italy and produced 18 winning attacks at 69%, three aces and two blocks. His 23 points made him the match’s leading scorer.

The 2020/21 season became his clearest breakthrough campaign. He was named Belgium’s Rookie of the Year and was also voted Knack’s Player of the Year by the club’s supporters.

Team success accompanied his individual progress. During the first Roeselare period, Desmet won four Belgian Cups, two Belgian championships and two Belgian Supercups. By 2022, he had achieved most of what was available domestically and was ready to pursue a goal he had discussed openly: playing abroad, preferably in Italy.

Two Seasons with Pallavolo Padova

Pallavolo Padova signed Desmet in 2022, giving him his first overseas club experience and placing him directly into the Italian SuperLega.

In an early interview with Pallavolo Padova, Desmet explained that he had been studying Italian for several months before arriving. He also welcomed the harder training environment, describing the move as an opportunity to learn in one of the strongest volleyball leagues in the world.

His first season involved adapting to a different competitive level and sharing the outside-hitter workload with an international roster. Padova retained him for 2023/24, and his production increased substantially during the second season.

Volleyball World recorded 200 points for Desmet in the 2023/24 SuperLega campaign. That total consisted of 169 attack points, 21 blocks and 10 aces. One of his best individual performances came against Itas Trentino, when he produced a match-high 20 points against the eventual Champions League winners.

The second Padova season was also played against a difficult physical backdrop. During Belgium’s preparation for EuroVolley in the summer of 2023, Desmet injured his ankle. He continued playing because of his ambition to remain available for the national team, but the problem did not fully resolve.

After his second season in Italy, medical intervention became necessary. Desmet eventually underwent two operations, but the ankle would continue to affect the remainder of his career.

One Season in Poland with Cuprum Stilon Gorzów

For 2024/25, Desmet moved from Italy to Cuprum Stilon Gorzów in Poland’s PlusLiga. It was another demanding league and gave him a larger statistical workload than he had carried during parts of his Padova period.

The official PlusLiga database recorded 26 matches and 77 sets for Desmet. He scored 192 points, including 165 successful attacks, 14 blocks and 13 aces.

There were several strong early-season performances. He scored a match-high 17 points in a 3–1 victory over Nowak-Mosty MKS Będzin and followed with 14 points against ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle.

His workload extended well beyond scoring. PlusLiga logged 475 serve receptions for Desmet during the season, underlining the six-rotation responsibilities attached to his position.

Cuprum finished the season without extending his contract. Desmet had already secured his next move: a return to the club where his senior career had begun.

Return to Knack and Final Season

Knack officially announced Desmet’s return on May 1, 2025. The original agreement covered three seasons, and the club presented him as an important addition for new head coach Matthijs Verhanneman.

Desmet returned wearing No. 10 and quickly resumed a substantial role on the left side. His familiarity with the club was paired with three seasons of experience from the Italian and Polish leagues, making him a more mature player than the one who had left Roeselare in 2022.

The physical problems that had begun with the 2023 ankle injury, however, remained unresolved. On February 24, 2026, Desmet and Knack announced that he would end his professional volleyball career after the season.

He explained that despite two operations, serious discomfort continued to prevent him from performing at the level he expected of himself. Rather than continue at reduced capacity, he chose to retire at only 26.

His final club season still added trophies. Knack won the BeNe Cup and later completed an undefeated BeNe Conference campaign. Roeselare also reached the Belgian championship final, where Greenyard Maaseik won the title.

National Team Career

Desmet moved from Belgium’s youth pathway into senior international competition while still in the early years of his Knack career. CEV records show him with the Red Dragons in the 2019 European Golden League and EuroVolley, beginning a senior national-team period that would last until 2026.

He remained involved through the 2021 and 2023 European Championship cycles and became one of Belgium’s regular outside-hitter options alongside players such as Sam Deroo and Seppe Rotty.

The 2023 Olympic Qualification Tournament provided one example of his scoring ability against high-level opposition. Desmet contributed 17 points in Belgium’s victory over Canada as the Red Dragons produced one of their strongest performances of the tournament.

His most significant senior international result came at the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship in the Philippines. Belgium completed an undefeated pool stage that included a five-set victory over defending world champions Italy.

The Red Dragons then defeated Finland 3–0 in the round of 16 to reach the World Championship quarterfinals for the first time in 55 years. Desmet contributed at important moments in that match, scoring the attack that closed the opening set before putting away an overpass to finish the second.

Italy won the quarterfinal rematch, but Belgium’s run into the last eight became a major result for the program and the final global championship of Desmet’s career.

He did not continue into Belgium’s historic first Volleyball Nations League campaign in 2026. Ahead of the competition, national-team coach Emanuele Zanini confirmed that Desmet had decided to stop with the Red Dragons for personal reasons.

That decision followed his previously announced retirement from professional club volleyball, closing his senior international career before the 2026 VNL.

Playing Style & Strengths

Desmet played as a six-rotation outside hitter, combining left-side attacking with serve reception, back-row responsibility, serving and blocking at the pin.

His height and jump allowed him to operate with a relatively high contact point. Recent club and competition listings used 198 cm for his height and 350 cm for his attack reach. Those dimensions gave him enough range to attack over or around established blocks without making his game dependent only on physical size.

His best statistical seasons show a fairly broad scoring distribution. With Padova in 2023/24, Desmet recorded 169 attack points, 21 blocks and 10 aces. In Poland the following year, he added 165 attacks, 14 blocks and 13 aces.

The PlusLiga season also gives a useful picture of his reception role. Desmet handled 475 receptions across 26 matches, with the league recording 43% positive reception. That workload reflects the main difference between his role and that of a high-volume opposite: he had to stay involved in first contact while remaining available as an attacking option.

Serving could change stretches of matches as well. The 2021 Champions League performance against Modena combined three aces with 18 attack points and two blocks, while his final season with Knack included several matches in which his serve created important runs.

From a tactical standpoint, Desmet’s value came from that balance. He could finish high balls from position four, attack in transition and contribute directly from the service line, but his place in the lineup also depended on carrying a significant part of the reception pattern.

The ankle problems that eventually ended his career were therefore particularly limiting for a position that demands repeated jumping, landing, lateral movement and six-rotation court coverage.

Retirement & Current Status

Mathijs Desmet is retired from professional volleyball and is no longer an active member of the Belgium men’s national team.

He announced his club retirement in February 2026 while still completing the 2025/26 season with Knack Volley Roeselare. The decision followed an ankle injury sustained during national-team preparation in the summer of 2023. Desmet continued playing after the original injury and later underwent two operations, but persistent discomfort remained.

His professional club career ended after Knack’s 2025/26 campaign. The season produced the BeNe Cup and BeNe Conference titles, although Roeselare lost the Belgian championship final to Greenyard Maaseik.

Desmet also stepped away from the Red Dragons before Belgium’s 2026 VNL campaign. In June, head coach Emanuele Zanini publicly confirmed that the outside hitter had stopped with the national team for personal reasons.

As a result, Desmet has no current club for the 2026/27 season and should be considered retired rather than an unsigned active player.
