His two seasons in Germany produced two Bundesliga championships, a German Cup, two League Cups and several individual distinctions, including the 2024–25 Bundesliga season MVP award. Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings
Hanes grew up in Orland Park, Illinois, in the Chicago metropolitan area. He began playing volleyball with Ultimate Volleyball Club in 2009 and later attended Carl Sandburg High School, where his combination of height and attacking power made him one of the leading high-school prospects in Illinois.
His senior high-school season included 346 kills, 145 digs and 49 service aces as Carl Sandburg finished third in the Illinois state championship. Hanes was named an AVCA First Team High School Seniors All-American, earned All-Illinois recognition and received the Daily Southtown Boys Volleyball Player of the Year award.
Volleyball also had a place in his extended family. His parents are Jennifer and Frank Hanes, his older brother is Frank, and his aunt Sue McCarthy played collegiate volleyball at Saint Francis University.
College Career at Ohio State
Hanes joined Ohio State for the 2017 season and redshirted while the Buckeyes won their second consecutive NCAA championship. He practiced with the team during that title season before moving into a major playing role the following year.
2018 Breakthrough
As a redshirt freshman in 2018, Hanes played in every match and made 28 starts. He finished with 400 kills, 49 aces, 55 blocks and 483.5 points while averaging 4.44 points per set.
His postseason serving became particularly notable. Hanes recorded 13 aces during the NCAA Tournament, an NCAA tournament record, and his eight aces against UC Irvine tied Ohio State’s single-match program record. He accumulated 55 kills over Ohio State’s three NCAA tournament matches and was selected to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.
Ohio State’s run ended in the NCAA semifinal against Long Beach State, where Hanes led the Buckeyes with 21 kills in a four-set loss. He also earned All-MIVA Second Team, MIVA All-Freshman Team and MIVA All-Tournament recognition during the season.
All-American Season in 2019
Hanes became an even larger part of the Ohio State offense in 2019.
He averaged 4.36 kills and 5.01 points per set, attacked at .332 and led the Buckeyes with 340 kills, 391 points and 34 aces. Despite playing opposite at 6-foot-10, he also finished second on the team with 92 digs.
His season included 11 matches with at least 20 points, a career-high 30 kills against Purdue Fort Wayne and a 22-kill, 10-dig double-double against McKendree.
The AVCA selected Hanes as an All-America Honorable Mention, while the MIVA named him to its First Team.
Leaving College for the U.S. National Team
Hanes still had collegiate eligibility remaining entering 2020, but he chose a different path.
In December 2019, Ohio State announced that he would forego his final college season to train with the U.S. men’s national team in Anaheim while completing his economics degree. He left the Buckeyes with 740 kills, 83 aces, 94 blocks and 875 career points.
The decision effectively ended his NCAA playing career and shifted his focus toward international volleyball and the professional game.
Club Career

Arago de Sète
Hanes began his professional career in France with Arago de Sète for the 2020–21 season.
Moving directly from American college volleyball into France’s top division required him to adapt to a longer schedule and more experienced blocking systems. The French season also marked his first extended period playing outside the United States.
After one year with Sète, Hanes moved to Poland.
BBTS Bielsko-Biała
Hanes joined BBTS Bielsko-Biała in 2021 and quickly became one of the team’s main scorers.
His first season ended with BBTS winning the 2021–22 TAURON 1. Liga and securing promotion to PlusLiga. The team swept its championship series against MKS Będzin 3–0, with Hanes scoring 21 points and earning match MVP honors in the deciding game.
He remained with Bielsko-Biała following promotion for the 2022–23 PlusLiga season. Official league statistics recorded 425 points over 25 matches, including 363 attacking points, 38 aces and 24 blocks.
The club struggled after moving into Poland’s top division, but the season gave Hanes regular high-volume attacking responsibility against one of Europe’s deepest domestic leagues.
KGHM Cuprum Lubin
For 2023–24, Hanes stayed in PlusLiga but moved to KGHM Cuprum Lubin.
Cuprum’s official player profile listed him at 212 cm with a 370 cm attacking reach and 353 cm blocking reach. By then he already had two years of Polish league experience and was becoming a more consistent part of the United States national-team pool.
His performances in the 2024 VNL also strengthened his profile before the next club season. Berlin highlighted outings of 24 points against Bulgaria and 31 against Türkiye when announcing his arrival in Germany.
Berlin Recycling Volleys
Berlin Recycling Volleys signed Hanes in June 2024 to replace long-time opposite Marek Šotola.
The move proved to be the most successful club chapter of his career to that point.
Hanes made an immediate impression at the 2024 German League Cup, helping Berlin defeat VfB Friedrichshafen 3–1 in the final. He served 12 aces across the tournament and was named MVP.

The rest of the 2024–25 season followed the same pattern.
Berlin won the German Cup after defeating Düren 3–2 in the final, with Hanes named both MVP and top scorer. The club then captured the Bundesliga championship to complete a domestic triple of League Cup, German Cup and league title.
Individually, Hanes was voted the 2024–25 Bundesliga season MVP after collecting nine gold match-MVP medals. The league highlighted his attacking power, serving pressure and ability to score in difficult situations during his first season in Germany.
A 44-Point Champions League Match
One of the most unusual performances of Hanes’s Berlin career came in the 2024–25 CEV Champions League playoff against SVG Lüneburg.
Berlin won the second leg 3–2 but was eliminated after losing the Golden Set. Hanes scored 44 points, including four aces and two blocks. CEV confirmed the 44-point total, while Olympiacos later identified it as the highest single-match scoring performance in Champions League history.
The match illustrated the workload Berlin was prepared to place on its opposite. Hanes remained the primary high-ball option even through five sets and a Golden Set against a familiar domestic opponent.

Second German Championship
Hanes stayed in Berlin for 2025–26.
The season began with another German League Cup title as Berlin defeated Lüneburg 3–1. The team later fell short in the German Cup, losing a five-set semifinal to Friedrichshafen, but again reached the Bundesliga final.
Berlin defeated Lüneburg in the championship series to retain the German title. Hanes was the leading scorer in all three finals and accumulated 84 points across the series, an average of 28 per match, with seven aces and six blocks.
Olympiacos’s signing announcement listed him as the Bundesliga’s Best Opposite, leading scorer and leading server for 2025–26. He finished the league campaign at 5.22 points per set with 65 aces.
After two seasons, two Bundesliga championships and a major individual breakthrough, Hanes left Berlin in May 2026.
Olympiacos ONEX
Olympiacos announced Hanes on May 26, 2026.
The transfer brought him to Greece for the first time and made him the club’s new primary opposite. In his official signing announcement, Hanes spoke about Olympiacos’s expectation of winning, the club’s history and the reputation of its supporters.
Olympiacos lists him at 212 cm and assigned him No. 22 for the 2026–27 season. He joins a roster that includes Martin Atanasov, Erik Röhrs and setter Michele Baranowicz.

National Team Career
Entry into the Senior Program
Hanes became a member of the U.S. men’s national-team program in 2020 after leaving Ohio State early to train in Anaheim.
His official senior international competition debut came at the 2021 Volleyball Nations League. He also played at the 2021 NORCECA Continental Championship as the United States began integrating younger players into the senior pool.
At 210–212 cm, Hanes offered the U.S. a physically imposing alternative at opposite behind an established generation led by players such as Matt Anderson.
2022 Pan American Cup Bronze
Hanes appeared in the 2022 VNL preliminary round before joining a younger U.S. roster for the Pan American Cup in Gatineau, Canada.
He became one of the team’s primary scorers during the tournament. In the semifinal loss to Canada, Hanes scored 27 points. The following day, he led the United States with 21 points as the Americans defeated Chile 3–1 to win bronze.
The tournament provided a larger offensive role than he had received with the full senior group and reinforced his value as a high-volume opposite.
2023 VNL Silver and NORCECA Gold
Hanes returned to the senior national team in 2023.
USA Volleyball credits him as a member of the squad that earned silver at the Volleyball Nations League Final. Later that summer he was selected for the NORCECA Continental Championship in Charleston, West Virginia.
The United States won the continental title, its first NORCECA championship since 2017. Hanes contributed throughout the event, including a 14-point performance on 13 kills and an ace in the opening sweep of Suriname.
The gold medal became his first senior continental championship.
2024 VNL
Hanes remained in the U.S. pool in 2024 and appeared during Weeks One and Three of the Volleyball Nations League.
His first week included two of his most productive international matches at that stage of his career: 24 points against Bulgaria and 31 points against Türkiye. Those performances came shortly before Berlin announced him as its new opposite.
He did not compete at the Paris Olympic Games, but his following two seasons in Berlin substantially strengthened his position within the national-team depth chart.
2026 VNL Breakthrough
The 2026 Volleyball Nations League became Hanes’s largest sustained scoring role with the senior United States team.
Across 15 matches, Volleyball World recorded 223 points: 179 attacks, 18 blocks and 26 aces. He averaged 14.87 points per match while converting attacks at 55.25 percent efficiency.
His impact became even larger during the VNL Finals.
Against reigning world champion Italy in the quarterfinal, Hanes scored 21 points and served six aces as the United States produced a straight-set upset. In the semifinal against Japan, he followed with 24 points as the Americans advanced to the championship match.
Poland defeated the United States 3–2 in the final, but Hanes led all scorers with 21 points, including 18 kills and three aces. The silver medal was the United States’ first VNL podium finish since 2023.
2026 NORCECA Champion
Hanes remained with the national team for the September 2026 NORCECA Continental Championship in Moncton, Canada.
Volleyball World recorded 60 points in five appearances, with 51 attack points, eight blocks and one ace. His largest performance came against Cuba, when he scored 27 points, including 23 attacks and four blocks.
The U.S. advanced to the final against host Canada and survived a five-set match to win the championship. Hanes and Matt Anderson led the American scoring with 18 points each; Hanes produced 15 kills, two blocks and an ace.
The victory gave him a second senior NORCECA gold medal and closed a 2026 international season in which he had become one of the United States’ primary scoring options.
Playing Style & Strengths
Hanes is a high-volume opposite built around height, attacking reach and service pressure.
At 212 cm, with a recent CEV listing of 375 cm for his spike reach, he can contact the ball from a high point even when the set is pushed away from the net. That physical profile is especially valuable in out-of-system situations, where the opposite often receives predictable high balls against a formed block.
Power is the most obvious part of his attacking game, but his Berlin performances also showed improved efficiency and decision-making. The Volleyball Bundesliga’s 2024–25 MVP profile specifically highlighted his ability to combine physical force with tactical shot selection rather than relying solely on hitting through the block.
His serve is equally important.
Hanes was already a high-level server at Ohio State, where he set the NCAA Tournament record with 13 aces in 2018. That skill carried into the professional game: he served 12 aces during Berlin’s three-match 2024 League Cup run, produced 65 Bundesliga aces in 2025–26 and finished the 2026 VNL with 26 aces.
The serve gives his teams value beyond direct aces. A hard jump serve can force the opponent away from the net, reduce access to the middle attacker and leave a more predictable high-ball offense for the block to organize against.
Hanes also brings significant blocking size at the right side of the net. His 2026 NORCECA tournament included eight block points, while his 2026 VNL produced another 18. For an opposite, that ability matters because he spends much of his front-row rotation blocking the opponent’s primary outside hitter.
His workload in Berlin demonstrated another part of the profile: durability under repeated high-ball volume. Scoring 44 points in a Champions League match and then averaging 28 points across three Bundesliga finals requires an opposite to remain effective even when the opposing block knows where the ball is likely to go.
