McCarthy’s senior club career has taken him through France, Czechia, Poland and Japan. Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings
McCarthy grew up in Lake Country, British Columbia, and came to organized volleyball relatively late compared with many elite players. Before volleyball became his main sport, he played hockey and basketball. UBC’s recruiting announcement records that he began organized volleyball in Grade 10 after being persuaded to try out for the team at George Elliot Secondary School. Within only a few years, he had become a Canadian junior international and one of the country’s notable recruits in his age group.
His early rise was accelerated by international opportunities. McCarthy represented Canada at youth level and later appeared at both the 2017 and 2019 FIVB U21 World Championships, with Canada finishing eighth in 2017 and 12th in 2019. At the 2017 U21 Pan American Cup, he was named one of the tournament’s Best Middle Blockers, providing an early indication that his physical tools and net play could translate beyond domestic competition.
McCarthy joined the University of British Columbia for the 2017–18 season and immediately became part of a championship team. UBC defeated two-time defending champion Trinity Western in straight sets in the 2018 U SPORTS final, ending the Thunderbirds’ 35-year wait for a national men’s volleyball title. McCarthy led UBC with 11.5 points in the championship match, tied for the team lead with nine kills and was named UBC’s Player of the Game.
That championship season became his only full university campaign before professional volleyball arrived unusually early. Rather than completing a conventional four- or five-year U SPORTS career, McCarthy moved to France and began playing for Montpellier Agglomération Volley UC in 2018. The move started a European professional career that would eventually take him through four countries before his 2026 transfer to Japan.
Club Career
Montpellier & the First Professional Years
McCarthy’s first professional destination was Montpellier Agglomération Volley UC, where he played from 2018 to 2020. Moving from U SPORTS volleyball into France so early in his development gave him professional experience while most players of the same age were still progressing through university competition. His Canadian junior career continued alongside that club development, including the 2019 U21 World Championship.
The French period did not immediately produce major senior trophies, but it established the European path that would define the next stage of his career. After Montpellier and a gap before his next documented club season, McCarthy joined VK Lvi Praha in Czechia in 2021.

VK Lvi Praha: 2021–2024
McCarthy spent three seasons with VK Lvi Praha, and the club became the setting for his first major professional championship. Lvi finished runner-up in the Czech Extraliga in 2021–22 before winning the league in 2022–23. McCarthy’s own contribution was recognized with the Czech league’s Best Middle Blocker award for that championship season.
The following season reinforced Lvi’s place near the top of Czech volleyball even though the club did not repeat as champion. The team finished runner-up in the 2023–24 Extraliga and competed in the CEV Champions League, with Osaka Bluteon’s later career summary listing Lvi ninth in Europe’s top club competition. By the time McCarthy left Prague in 2024, he had progressed from a young Canadian prospect playing abroad into an established European middle blocker with a domestic title, an individual positional award and Champions League experience.
Bogdanka LUK Lublin: 2024–2026
McCarthy moved into Poland’s PlusLiga in 2024 with Bogdanka LUK Lublin. His first season produced two major titles. Lublin won the 2025 CEV Challenge Cup, finishing ahead of Cucine Lube Civitanova in the competition’s final standings, and then captured the 2024–25 Polish championship. In the first leg of the Challenge Cup final, McCarthy contributed 11 points as Lublin defeated Lube 3–1, giving the Polish side control of the tie before it completed its first European trophy.
That season also represented another step up in competitive environment. Instead of simply being attached to a title-winning roster, McCarthy was part of a Lublin team competing simultaneously for domestic and European trophies, alongside players such as Wilfredo León and fellow middle blockers Aleks Grozdanov and Jan Nowakowski.
The 2025–26 season did not bring a second consecutive league championship, but McCarthy remained productive across a long PlusLiga schedule. Volleyball World’s competition statistics credit him with 190 points: 98 in attack, 53 from blocks and 39 from serves. His 53 blocks placed him among the league’s leading blockers, while 39 aces were an unusually large contribution from a middle blocker and foreshadowed the serving award he would later earn with Canada.
Lublin finished the season as PlusLiga runner-up after winning the Polish Cup, and the club also reached fifth place in the CEV Champions League. That closed McCarthy’s Polish period with a résumé that included the PlusLiga championship, CEV Challenge Cup, Polish Cup and another league final.

Osaka Bluteon: 2026–Present
On July 24, 2026, Osaka Bluteon announced McCarthy as a new signing for the 2026–27 season. The Japanese club assigned him No. 33, the same number he has used with Canada and Lublin, and listed him at 200 cm and 101 kg with a maximum reach of 362 cm.
The transfer gives McCarthy another significant league change after France, Czechia and Poland. Osaka entered the season as the reigning SV.League champion and had also finished runner-up at the 2025 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship, placing McCarthy in a squad built to compete domestically and internationally.

McCarthy’s professional chronology from Montpellier onward is confirmed by Osaka Bluteon’s signing record, with UBC representing his university season before the move to Europe.
National Team Career
McCarthy’s Canadian career began well before his senior VNL appearances. He was already in the junior national-team system while attending George Elliot Secondary School and went on to compete at the U21 World Championship in both 2017 and 2019. Canada finished eighth in the former and 12th in the latter, while the 2018 NORCECA U21 Championship added a bronze medal to his youth résumé.

His pathway then progressed through Canada’s NextGen structure. UBC confirmed his selection to the 2021 NextGen/Senior B program, and Team Canada records a silver medal for Canada at the 2021 NORCECA Championship. From 2022, McCarthy became part of the senior-team cycle that would ultimately reach the Paris Olympics.
In 2022, he competed in the Volleyball Nations League and was part of Canada’s silver-medal team at the Pan American Cup in Gatineau. The next summer brought a more visible leadership role. McCarthy captained Canada’s NextGen-based squad at the 2023 Pan American Cup in Guadalajara, where Canada defeated Brazil 3–1 in the final to win the country’s first men’s gold medal in the history of that event.
McCarthy’s place in the senior program strengthened further in 2024. Canada finished sixth in the VNL, then selected him among the 12 players for the Paris Olympic Games. It was his Olympic debut, and he recorded 11 points across Canada’s three matches—six attack points, four blocks and one ace—as the team finished 10th.
Leadership returned to the foreground during the 2025 VNL. McCarthy captained Canada’s roster across the campaign, including a five-set opening victory over Germany in which he led both teams with five blocks. He again produced five blocks against Argentina the following day. Canada finished the VNL in 13th place.

At the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship in the Philippines, McCarthy remained a significant service threat even though Nick Hoag captained the tournament roster. He hit six aces and finished with 12 points in Canada’s opening victory over Libya, then added three aces and a block while sharing the team scoring lead with eight points against Türkiye. Canada advanced from Pool G before its tournament ended against Poland in the Round of 16.
The 2026 NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship added another medal and one of McCarthy’s clearest individual international distinctions. He entered late in the first set against Puerto Rico and immediately served three consecutive aces, then produced six blocks in Canada’s group-stage win over Mexico. In the semifinal against Cuba, he scored six aces as Canada reached the final and secured qualification for the 2027 men’s world championship.
Canada ultimately took silver after a five-set final against the United States. McCarthy was named Best Server of the championship after producing 15 aces during the six-day main tournament. NORCECA’s award announcement described him as the competition’s clear leading server.
Canada remained in Moncton for the subsequent NORCECA Olympic qualification stage. The team defeated Mexico in the semifinal but lost 3–1 to Cuba in the final, meaning the direct continental berth for Los Angeles 2028 went to Cuba. McCarthy nevertheless ended the September window with a world-championship qualification, a continental silver medal and an individual serving award.

Playing Style & Strengths
McCarthy’s serving has developed into a defining part of his competitive profile. That conclusion is supported across both club and international volleyball rather than by one isolated tournament. Volleyball World credited him with 39 service points during the 2025–26 PlusLiga season, and his 2025 World Championship included six aces against Libya. At the 2026 NORCECA Championship, he served three consecutive aces immediately after entering against Puerto Rico, followed by six aces in the semifinal win over Cuba. He finished the main championship with the Best Server award.
His blocking remains the more conventional middle-blocker strength, but the statistical evidence shows consistent point production there as well. McCarthy recorded 53 block points in the 2025–26 PlusLiga season, ranking among the competition’s leading blockers. With Canada, he led both teams with five blocks against Germany in the opening match of the 2025 VNL and produced a match-high six blocks against Mexico at the 2026 NORCECA Championship.
At 200 cm, McCarthy is not unusually tall by international middle-blocker standards, but his listed 362 cm maximum reach gives him a physical profile that supports both first-tempo attacking and play above the net. His PlusLiga numbers also show that he was more than a specialist blocker in Lublin: of his 190 points in 2025–26, 98 came from attack. The combination of quick middle offense, repeatable block production and an increasingly dangerous serve makes his value less dependent on a single phase of the game.
There is also evidence of leadership beyond his technical role. McCarthy captained Canada to Pan American Cup gold in 2023 and again handled captaincy during the 2025 VNL campaign. That does not make leadership a measurable playing skill, but it does show that his responsibilities with Canada have extended beyond being a rotation middle.

Personal Life & Public Profile
McCarthy grew up in Lake Country and is a citizen of Métis Nation British Columbia. His Indigenous identity has become a documented part of his public life as an athlete. In 2023, the Canadian Olympic Foundation selected him as one of the recipients of the Bitove Indigenous Awards, which support Indigenous athletes with the costs of high-performance sport and community initiatives. McCarthy described representing his community and Indigenous heritage as an important part of competing for Canada.
His combination of international performance and community representation later brought another recognition. In March 2026, I·SPARC and Sport BC named McCarthy the 2025 I·SPARC Male Athlete of the Year. The award cited his Olympic participation, professional success with Lublin, international results and representation of the Indigenous community.
McCarthy’s early sporting background also extends beyond volleyball. Before taking up the sport seriously in Grade 10, he played both hockey and basketball, making his rapid progression from a relatively late start to junior international volleyball, a U SPORTS championship and European professional competition particularly unusual.
Where Is Fynn McCarthy Playing Now?
McCarthy is an active professional player with Osaka Bluteon in Japan. The club signed him on July 24, 2026, for the 2026–27 season and lists him as No. 33, a 200 cm middle blocker with a 362 cm maximum reach. Osaka’s current player profile also lists his Canada men’s national-team tenure as continuing from 2022 to the present.
The move to Japan followed two trophy-heavy seasons with Bogdanka LUK Lublin and came shortly before another meaningful international window. In September 2026, McCarthy helped Canada win NORCECA silver and qualify for the 2027 men’s world championship while earning Best Server honors. Canada subsequently fell to Cuba in the final of the separate NORCECA Los Angeles 2028 qualification event, so the team did not secure the region’s direct Olympic berth at that stage.
For McCarthy, the 2026–27 season therefore begins with a new club environment but an established international role. His recent seasons have included the Paris Olympics, a World Championship, domestic and European club titles, national-team captaincy and one of the strongest serving runs of his international career.
