Hugh McCutcheon is a New Zealand-born volleyball coach and sports executive who serves as Secretary General of the FIVB. Appointed to the federation’s senior executive role in November 2024, he now works at the administrative level of the international game after a coaching career that included Olympic medals with both the United States men’s and women’s national teams. McCutcheon was born in Christchurch and played for New Zealand before moving to the United States, where his career developed through collegiate coaching and the USA Volleyball system.
His most prominent coaching result came at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, when the United States men won gold under his direction. He then moved directly to the U.S. women’s program and guided that team to Olympic silver at London 2012. McCutcheon subsequently became head coach of the University of Minnesota women’s team, adding a long NCAA chapter to a résumé already defined by international success. His career is notable for the range of roles he has occupied rather than for one uninterrupted national-team tenure: player, assistant, Olympic head coach, college coach and now global federation executive. The FIVB position keeps him closely connected to high-performance volleyball while shifting his responsibilities from match preparation to governance, development and the broader international structure of the sport.
