José Roberto Guimarães is a Brazilian volleyball coach and former setter who remains head coach of Brazil’s women’s national team in the 2026 cycle. Commonly known as Zé Roberto, he has one of the most distinctive Olympic coaching records in volleyball: he is the only coach to win Olympic gold with both a men’s and a women’s national team. He led Brazil’s men to the title at Barcelona 1992, then later guided the Brazilian women to Olympic gold in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
His women’s national-team tenure has become the defining long-term chapter of his career. Beyond the two Olympic titles, Brazil won silver at Tokyo 2020 and bronze at Paris 2024 under his direction, while remaining a regular contender in the World Grand Prix, Volleyball Nations League and major continental competitions. The Brazilian federation continued to list Guimarães as women’s head coach throughout the 2026 season, including the South American Championship cycle tied to qualification for Los Angeles 2028. His career also includes club coaching in Brazil and abroad and earlier experience as an international player, but the durability of his work with the national program is what makes his profile unusual. Guimarães was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2024, recognizing a career that spans multiple generations and both sides of Brazil’s Olympic volleyball history.
