Masayoshi Manabe is a Japanese volleyball coach and former international setter who returned to club coaching in 2026 as head coach of the IBK Altos in South Korea’s women’s V-League. The move followed his second spell leading Japan’s women’s national team, which ended after the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle. IBK appointed him for the 2026–27 season, giving Manabe his first major Korean club project and extending a career that has moved between Japanese domestic volleyball and the national program.
Manabe’s defining results came with Japan’s women. During his first tenure as national-team head coach, Japan won bronze at the 2010 FIVB World Championship and then captured the bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the country’s first Olympic women’s volleyball medal since 1984. He returned to the post in 2022 and guided Japan to silver in the 2024 Volleyball Nations League before the Paris Olympics. Before coaching, Manabe played setter for Japan at international level and competed professionally in the domestic league. That background has made the setter’s organizational perspective a recurring part of his volleyball identity, but his career is broader than one tactical label. The IBK role places an experienced national-team coach inside a different league culture where day-to-day roster development and a full professional season replace the shorter rhythm of international competition.
