The coaching career of Zoran Gajić

Zoran Gajić is a Serbian former volleyball coach and sports administrator best known for leading Yugoslavia’s men to Olympic gold at Sydney 2000. Born in 1958, Gajić coached across club and national-team volleyball during a period in which the Yugoslav and later Serbian system produced one of Europe’s strongest generations. His national-team results included Olympic bronze in 1996, World Championship silver in 1998 and the Sydney Olympic title, followed by European Championship gold in 2001.

His career also extended well beyond the Yugoslav national team. Gajić coached clubs and national teams in several countries and later moved increasingly into administration. He became president of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia before entering national government, serving as Serbia’s Minister of Sport from October 2022 until April 2025 across two government terms. That public role is historical rather than current as of 2026, an important distinction because his profile now sits at the intersection of coaching legacy and sports governance rather than active bench work. Gajić’s strongest volleyball identity remains the national-team cycle around the turn of the century, when Yugoslavia moved from major-medal contender to Olympic champion. His career illustrates a route common to relatively few elite coaches: from international competition, through federation leadership, into national-level sports administration.
