Gabi Garcia Fernandez is an American opposite from Puerto Rico whose career has connected elite NCAA volleyball, top European clubs and two different senior national-team systems. He became a major figure at BYU, where his explosive jump serve and ability to terminate from the right pin earned national recognition, including AVCA National Player of the Year honors in 2020. His physical game translated directly to the professional level: at two meters tall, he attacks with a fast arm, creates pressure from the service line and can be used as a high-volume scorer when an offense is forced away from its first tempo.
Garcia Fernandez began his international career with Puerto Rico and helped the team win the 2021 NORCECA Championship. After FIVB approved his federation transfer in 2022, he entered the United States national-team pathway and later became part of the U.S. senior competition pool. His club career has included high-level Italian stops with Cucine Lube Civitanova, Pallavolo Padova and Itas Trentino, exposing him to systems that demand efficiency not only on ideal sets but also in transition and out-of-system situations.
For the 2026–27 season, Garcia Fernandez joined Toray Arrows Shizuoka in Japan’s SV.League after his time with Trentino. The move adds another major league to a career already shaped by Puerto Rican roots, U.S. collegiate development and extensive experience in Italy.
