Gong Xiangyu is a Chinese opposite whose career has combined scoring responsibility with an unusually complete all-around skill set for the position. She broke into the senior national team at a young age and became part of China’s gold-medal run at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Unlike opposites used only as terminal attackers, Gong has often contributed in defense, reception patterns and transition organization as well.
She remained active with China in 2026, appearing in both the Volleyball Nations League and the AVC continental season. Her longevity across Olympic cycles and major Asian competitions has made her one of the experienced anchors of the Chinese roster, particularly valuable when the team needs continuity between younger players and established international standards.
