What the Opening Round Told Us
Title defense
Conegliano started from the front again
The defending champions opened with a straight-sets win over Cuneo and immediately returned to the top group on three points. After eight consecutive Scudetti, every early Conegliano result is measured against an unusually high domestic standard.
Milano
Paola Egonu set the early scoring tone
Milano opened with a 3–0 win over Firenze, with Egonu scoring 27 points. It was the clearest individual performance of the first weekend and an early reminder that Milano remain one of the teams capable of challenging Conegliano.
First upset
Chieri took a five-set win at Scandicci
Scandicci twice led the match, but Chieri came back to win the deciding set 15–11. Sarah Van Aalen was named MVP after controlling a result that immediately complicated one of the title contenders’ starts.
Early depth
Novara also survived a five-set opener
Igor Gorgonzola Novara beat UYBA 3–2, joining Chieri on two points and showing how quickly the middle of the table can separate once five-set matches begin redistributing league points.

2026–27 Transfers & Continuity
Conegliano
Continuity around the championship core
Zhu Ting was confirmed for a third season, while captain Joanna Wołosz returned for a tenth year with the club. Conegliano entered the new campaign with much of the championship core intact rather than rebuilding after another title.
Scandicci
A reshaped attack around Ognjenović
Maja Ognjenović and Avery Skinner stayed, while the club said goodbye to Sarah Franklin and Marta Bechis. The current roster includes Kiera Van Ryk and Julia Bergmann, giving Scandicci a noticeably different attacking mix for 2026–27.
Novara
A new cycle without losing the spine
Carlotta Cambi, Tatiana Tolok and captain Sara Bonifacio were retained, while Massimo Barbolini returned as head coach. Novara changed the technical direction without dismantling the core of the team.
Competition Guide
How Serie A1 Works
Serie A1 has 14 clubs playing a 26-round regular season. Each team meets every opponent home and away before the table splits into championship and survival consequences.
The top eight advance to the Scudetto playoffs. Quarterfinals are played home-and-away with a possible Golden Set; semifinals and finals are best-of-five series. Teams finishing 13th and 14th are relegated to Serie A2.
League position also matters in Europe: the championship result and regular-season order feed into Champions League qualification, while Coppa Italia and the Challenge playoffs help determine CEV Cup and Challenge Cup places.
