French middle blocker Barthélémy Chinenyeze is a two-time Olympic champion who won gold with France at both Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. He reached the senior national team at 19, was named Best Middle Blocker at his first Olympic Games and became part of the French generation that followed its breakthrough Tokyo title by successfully defending Olympic gold on home soil three years later.
Chinenyeze currently plays for Fenerbahçe Medicana in Türkiye after spending six consecutive seasons in Italy with Vibo Valentia, Allianz Milano and Cucine Lube Civitanova. His club career began in France, where he became a Ligue A champion and league MVP with Tours, while his international honors also include the 2017 World League and VNL titles in 2022 and 2024.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings
Chinenyeze was born in Coudekerque-Branche in northern France and did not begin playing volleyball immediately. According to a CEV profile from his first Champions League season, he played football before switching to volleyball at age 13.
His development accelerated quickly. He started in Wattignies before entering the French federation’s national training program at the Centre National de Volley-Ball in Montpellier. By 2016, only a few years after taking up the sport, he was ready for senior club volleyball with Spacer’s Toulouse.

Toulouse gave Chinenyeze his first professional season in 2016–17. Injuries elsewhere in the roster initially created additional opportunities, and he worked his way into a larger role as the club reached the French championship final. The season also moved him rapidly into the national-team conversation.
On 13 May 2017, Chinenyeze made his senior France debut against Belgium. He was 19 and had completed only one professional club season.
Club Career
Toulouse, a Short Polish Stop and a Breakthrough Season with Tours
Chinenyeze spent two seasons with Spacer’s Toulouse, finishing as French championship runner-up in his first professional campaign. His rise was fast enough that by early 2018 he was already attracting interest outside France.

In March 2018, he joined Asseco Resovia Rzeszów for a short spell in Poland before returning to France for the 2018–19 season with Tours VB. That move became one of the defining stages of his early career.
Tours won the Coupe de France in March 2019, defeating Chaumont 3–0 in the final. Chinenyeze led the match with 12 points as he collected the first club trophy of his professional career.
His influence extended across the league season. The French federation named him Ligue A MVP after a regular season in which Tours lost only twice in 24 matches. He had also been named MVP of the Coupe de France Final Four and was selected among the league’s leading middle blockers.

Tours completed the campaign by winning the French championship. Chinenyeze left the country at the end of the season having won both major domestic trophies and the league’s top individual award.
Six Seasons in Italy
Italy became Chinenyeze’s club home from 2019 through 2025. He first joined Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia, spending two seasons there before moving to Allianz Milano for 2021–22.
Cucine Lube Civitanova signed him in 2022. The move placed him in a club accustomed to competing for the SuperLega title and in European competition, and Chinenyeze quickly became an important part of Lube’s middle-blocker rotation.

One of his standout performances came during the 2023 SuperLega final series against Itas Trentino. With Lube trailing the series after the opening match, Chinenyeze scored a team-high 18 points, including 17 kills, in a five-set Game 2 victory. For a middle blocker, that scoring volume was unusually high and illustrated the attacking responsibility he could carry when the matchup allowed it.
His final Lube season delivered a long-awaited trophy. Civitanova reached the 2025 Coppa Italia Final Four and eliminated European champions Trentino in five sets in the semifinal. During that match, Chinenyeze also passed 1,500 career points in Italian volleyball.
Lube then defeated Rana Verona 3–2 in the final. Chinenyeze scored eight points and produced one of the decisive late blocks in the tie-break as Civitanova secured its eighth Coppa Italia.
The same 2024–25 campaign brought two more finals. Lube finished runner-up to Bogdanka LUK Lublin in the CEV Challenge Cup and lost the Italian championship series to Trentino. Chinenyeze left after three seasons with the club, with the Coppa Italia as the major trophy of his Civitanova period.
Fenerbahçe and a New League
In June 2025, Chinenyeze signed for Fenerbahçe, ending six consecutive seasons in Italy and moving to the Turkish Efeler League. The transfer also reunited him at club level with fellow French international Earvin Ngapeth for the beginning of the new chapter.
His arrival in Istanbul was complicated by an injury suffered with France before he could settle into a normal club rhythm. During the 2025 World Championship against Argentina, Chinenyeze suffered a patellar-tendon injury in his right knee during his 200th senior appearance for France. The injury required several weeks of rehabilitation.
He nevertheless returned during his first Fenerbahçe season. In a November 2025 interview with the French federation, Chinenyeze said he had resumed competition before feeling completely back to 100%, with the club keen to have him available for the Turkish Super Cup.
Fenerbahçe retained him into 2026–27. The current Turkish league registration lists Chinenyeze as number 9, while his 2026 CEV club registration uses number 2.

National Team Career
From Senior Debut to World League Gold in 2017
Chinenyeze’s international breakthrough was exceptionally fast. He made his senior debut in May 2017 and was part of France’s World League roster only weeks later.
France advanced to the Final Six in Curitiba, Brazil, where Chinenyeze went from newcomer to meaningful contributor. The team defeated Brazil in a five-set final to claim the World League title, giving the 19-year-old middle blocker his first major senior international gold medal during the same summer in which he had debuted.
He remained in France’s senior setup and won VNL silver in 2018. By then, the transition from promising young middle to regular international option was already well established.
Tokyo 2020: Olympic Champion and Best Middle Blocker
The Tokyo Olympic cycle changed the scale of Chinenyeze’s career. France arrived in Japan still seeking the first Olympic volleyball medal in the history of its men’s program.
The team survived a demanding tournament and reached the gold-medal match against the Russian Olympic Committee. France won the final in five sets to claim its first Olympic championship.
Chinenyeze’s individual performance was also recognized. Volleyball World selected him as one of the two Best Middle Blockers in the Tokyo 2020 Dream Team, alongside Ivan Iakovlev.
The award reflected more than the final result. Chinenyeze had become one of the main net players in a French side whose first Olympic title established the generation of Ngapeth, Antoine Brizard, Jean Patry, Jenia Grebennikov, Trévor Clévenot and Chinenyeze among the most accomplished in French volleyball history.
VNL Titles and a Second Olympic Gold
France remained among the leading men’s national teams after Tokyo. Chinenyeze played a substantial role in the 2022 Volleyball Nations League, producing 102 points across the competition. His total included 75 attack points, 20 blocks and seven aces, with Volleyball World recording a 66.96% attacking efficiency.
France won the VNL title that summer, defeating the United States in the final. It was another major international trophy for Chinenyeze and reinforced the importance of his first-tempo offense alongside his blocking.
The team returned to the top of the VNL podium in 2024. France entered the Finals from sixth place in the preliminary standings, then defeated Italy, Poland and Japan in succession to win the title in Łódź.
That tournament became the final major preparation for the Paris Olympics. France entered its home Games as defending champion and completed another title run, defeating Poland 3–0 in the final.
Chinenyeze scored 45 points during Paris 2024, with 30 in attack, 13 from blocks and two from serve. His attack efficiency was 60%, while the 13 blocks made blocking one of the most visible parts of his tournament contribution.
The result made Chinenyeze a two-time Olympic champion before his 27th birthday.
The 200-Cap Milestone and 2026 Status
The 2025 international season ended painfully. Chinenyeze reached his 200th senior appearance during France’s World Championship match against Argentina, but the same match produced the right-knee injury that interrupted the beginning of his first Fenerbahçe season.
He recovered and returned to competition during 2025–26. Chinenyeze remained part of France’s senior international group in 2026, with Volleyball World’s VNL roster again listing him as number 1.
By this stage, his national-team career had extended across three different phases of French men’s volleyball: the 2017 World League-winning side, the breakthrough Olympic champions of Tokyo and the team that successfully defended Olympic gold in Paris.
Playing Style & Strengths
Blocking is one of the clearest recurring strengths in Chinenyeze’s international record. His Tokyo 2020 Best Middle Blocker award provides the strongest individual recognition, while his later Olympic numbers show that the skill remained central to his game. At Paris 2024, he produced 13 block points in six matches, including four blocks against both Slovenia and Germany.
His first-tempo attack is equally important. During France’s title-winning 2022 VNL campaign, Chinenyeze scored 75 attack points at 66.96% efficiency. Two years later in Paris, he converted his Olympic attacks at 60%. Those percentages support the role he has repeatedly held alongside high-level setters such as Benjamin Toniutti and Antoine Brizard: a middle who can punish single-block situations rather than functioning only as a decoy.
Chinenyeze can also produce unusually large scoring nights for his position. His 18-point performance against Trentino in the 2023 Italian final series included 17 kills, and a later SuperLega performance against Allianz Milano brought 17 points on 72% attacking, with two aces and two blocks. These matches show the upper end of his offensive involvement when his connection with the setter and the opponent’s blocking matchups create enough first-tempo opportunities.
His value therefore comes from the combination of three repeatable elements rather than one isolated specialty: efficient quick attacking, a proven ability to score directly from the block and enough serving pressure to add points outside the normal middle-blocker attack pattern.
