Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Komenda began playing volleyball in Kraków with UKS Hutnik Dobry Wynik Kraków. His development accelerated after moving to AKS Resovia Rzeszów in 2012, giving him access to one of Poland’s established youth programs.

Success followed quickly. Komenda won the Polish cadet championship during his first season with AKS Resovia and continued representing the club while studying and training at SMS PZPS Spała between 2013 and 2015. He later added a Polish junior championship, building his reputation as one of the more promising setters of his age group.

The national-team pathway developed alongside his club career. Komenda appeared within Poland’s youth international structure through the U19, U20, U21 and U23 levels before eventually moving into senior consideration.

His height was already an important part of his profile. At 198 cm, Komenda offered dimensions more commonly associated with attackers than setters, giving him additional reach as a blocker while still developing the hand control, decision-making and tempo management required to direct an offense.

Club Career

Effector Kielce and the Move to GKS Katowice

Komenda entered full-time PlusLiga volleyball with Effector Kielce in 2015. The move gave him regular senior competition immediately after his youth years and allowed him to develop against experienced professional blocking and serving systems.

After two seasons in Kielce, he joined GKS Katowice in 2017. His performances there coincided with his first senior national-team call-up, an early sign that his league development was beginning to translate into consideration at international level.

Komenda spent two seasons with GKS before returning to Rzeszów, where he had previously played as a junior.

Return to Resovia and Two Seasons with Stal Nysa

Asseco Resovia signed Komenda for the 2019–20 season. The transfer returned him to the organization in which he had spent part of his youth career, this time as an established PlusLiga setter.

Resovia’s official announcement listed him at 198 cm and emphasized the development route that had taken him from Kraków through AKS Resovia, SMS PZPS Spała, Kielce and Katowice. By this stage, he had also started to build a more consistent relationship with the Polish senior national team.

Komenda moved to Stal Nysa in 2020 and remained there for two seasons. The club was operating at a different competitive level from the traditional PlusLiga powers, placing greater responsibility on the setter to organize an offense over a long league season rather than simply manage a roster filled with established internationals.

Those years preceded the move that changed the trajectory of his club career.

Building a Contender in Lublin

Komenda joined LUK Lublin in 2022. At the time, the club was still establishing itself in Poland’s top division rather than entering each season as an obvious championship contender.

His first season ended with Lublin outside the league’s leading group, but the team continued strengthening its roster and competitive identity. Komenda increasingly became a central figure within that process and took on the captaincy.

The breakthrough arrived in 2024–25. Lublin entered the CEV Challenge Cup and progressed all the way to a two-legged final against Cucine Lube Civitanova, one of the most accomplished clubs in Italian volleyball.

Winning the Challenge Cup gave Lublin the first major trophy in its history. The significance grew only weeks later when the club advanced through the PlusLiga playoffs and met Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie in the championship series.

Lublin won the series 3–1 to become Polish champion for the first time. Komenda was named MVP of the decisive fourth match, an appropriate conclusion for a captain who had been with the club during its progression from mid-table team to national champion.

A Domestic Treble and Champions League Debut

The success continued into 2025–26. BOGDANKA LUK defeated Zawiercie to win the Polish Super Cup before adding another first in January 2026—the Polish Cup.

Lublin swept Asseco Resovia 3–0 in the cup final, completing a sequence of three different Polish trophies in roughly eight months. Komenda was selected as the tournament’s Best Setter.

In CEV’s feature on Lublin’s golden run, Komenda described the period as the realization of a sporting dream while also pointing to the more difficult stages of his career that had preceded it.

Lublin simultaneously entered the CEV Champions League for the first time. The club advanced from the group stage before meeting domestic rival PGE Projekt Warszawa in the quarterfinals. Lublin won the return match 3–2, but Warszawa had already secured the two sets required to advance after winning the opening leg.

The PlusLiga season also ended against strong opposition. Lublin returned to the championship series but lost a five-match final to Zawiercie, finishing as Polish runner-up one year after winning the title.

Komenda remained with BOGDANKA LUK for 2026–27, extending a partnership that had already produced the most successful era in the club’s history.

National Team Career

Komenda received senior national-team attention while playing for GKS Katowice in 2017, but his sustained involvement in Poland’s major international competitions began later.

By 2019, he was part of a Polish season that produced medals across several competitions. Poland finished third in the Volleyball Nations League, won bronze at the European Championship and earned silver at the FIVB World Cup.

Breaking into Poland’s setter rotation was never straightforward. The national program could draw from experienced options including Fabian Drzyzga and later Grzegorz Łomacz and Marcin Janusz, meaning strong club performances did not automatically translate into a first-choice international role.

Komenda nevertheless remained within the broader national-team structure and added VNL silver in 2021. Further opportunities followed as Poland continued rotating a deep pool of setters across the long international calendar.

From Rotation Setter to a Larger National-Team Role

The 2024 season again brought VNL involvement, with Poland finishing the competition with bronze. Komenda’s most significant change in status, however, came during the next international cycle.

In 2025, he assumed a larger role in Nikola Grbić’s national-team offense and became a first-choice setting option during major tournaments.

Poland reached the 2025 VNL Finals and defeated Italy in the championship match to win gold. The title was Komenda’s first VNL championship and represented the clearest indication yet of his increased importance to the team.

The World Championship in the Philippines later that year presented a different challenge. Poland reached the semifinals before losing to Italy, then defeated Czechia 3–1 in the bronze-medal match. Komenda operated as one of Poland’s primary setters during the tournament, finishing the season with his first senior World Championship medal.

VNL Champion Again in 2026

Poland returned to the VNL final in 2026, this time facing the United States.

The match went five sets before Poland completed a 3–2 victory and successfully defended its title. Komenda remained heavily involved throughout the campaign and contributed in an area that separates him from many international setters: scoring at the net.

Volleyball World recorded 17 points for Komenda during the 2026 VNL. Fourteen came from blocks, with another point in attack and two from serve. For a setter, that scoring distribution illustrated the practical value of his 198 cm frame.

The championship gave him consecutive VNL gold medals and placed him within a Polish generation that had maintained its position near the top of international volleyball despite significant competition for places inside the roster.

European Champion in 2026

The international season continued at EuroVolley 2026.

Poland advanced to the championship match against France and won 3–1 to take the European title. Komenda started the final at setter, completing a summer in which Poland had won both the VNL and European Championship.

The European gold added another major title to a national-team period that had changed quickly for Komenda. After years spent competing for opportunities within one of volleyball’s deepest setter pools, he had become trusted with significant responsibility during consecutive championship-winning seasons.

Playing Style & Strengths

Komenda’s physical profile immediately differentiates him from many setters. At 198 cm, he provides substantial size at the net, allowing Poland and Lublin to maintain a stronger blocking presence when he rotates into the front row.

That is not simply a theoretical advantage. During the 2025–26 PlusLiga season, Volleyball World recorded 48 block points for Komenda—an unusually high scoring contribution for a setter. His 14 blocks during the 2026 VNL provided further evidence that blocking is a genuine part of his value rather than an occasional bonus.

His setting style is based on controlling tempo while distributing responsibility across multiple attacking options. Lublin’s rise required Komenda to organize increasingly ambitious offenses as the roster developed, eventually managing lineups containing high-level scorers while still involving the middle attack enough to prevent the block from becoming predictable.

At international level, the challenge becomes even more demanding. Poland can field elite attackers at virtually every front-row position, so the setter’s responsibility is not simply to feed the most prominent scorer but to read blocking matchups, preserve offensive rhythm and decide when to accelerate play through the middle.

Komenda’s height also affects his decision-making around the net. He can contest jousts, attack second balls and close blocks more aggressively than smaller setters, reducing one of the defensive compromises teams often accept in that rotation.

Serving provides another secondary scoring route. He recorded 10 aces in the 2025–26 Polish league and two during the 2026 VNL. Those numbers are less striking than his blocking totals, but they reinforce the idea that his contribution extends beyond distribution.

Leadership has become another defining part of his club identity. As Lublin captain, Komenda has been responsible for directing the offense while also helping manage the team through high-pressure finals and the transition from emerging PlusLiga club to championship contender.

Personal Life

Komenda married in January 2020 while he was playing for Asseco Resovia. He publicly marked the occasion through his Instagram account, writing “Mr. & Mrs. Komenda” alongside the wedding date of January 11, 2020.

His public profile has otherwise remained centered primarily on volleyball rather than celebrity-style coverage. That includes posts documenting club competition, national-team duty and significant career moments through his verified Instagram account, @marcin_komenda.

The contrast between his early career and his later success has also become part of how Komenda discusses his development. His rise with Lublin came after seasons spent with clubs outside the championship favorites and after years competing for national-team opportunities in one of the deepest setter groups in world volleyball.

Where Is Marcin Komenda Playing Now?

Komenda plays for BOGDANKA LUK Lublin in the 2026–27 season and wears No. 4. He has been with the club since 2022 and remains one of the central figures of a team that moved from the middle of the PlusLiga standings to winning European and domestic trophies.

His current Lublin period already includes the CEV Challenge Cup, Polish championship, Polish Super Cup and Polish Cup. The club also entered the CEV Champions League after its domestic breakthrough and returned to European competition for 2026–27.

Komenda continues to carry leadership responsibilities after captaining Lublin through its title-winning period.

He also remains active with the Poland Men’s National Volleyball Team, where he wears No. 4. His most recent international season ended with two major gold medals: the 2026 Volleyball Nations League and the 2026 European Championship.

Recent Performance Snapshot

Komenda’s recent scoring statistics are unusually revealing for a setter because so much of the production comes from blocking.

CompetitionTotal PointsAttack PointsBlock PointsService Aces
2025–26 PlusLiga76184810
2026 Volleyball Nations League171142

The 48 blocks recorded during the 2025–26 PlusLiga season made blocking a meaningful part of his club contribution rather than a minor statistical category. He added 10 service aces and 18 attacking points, reaching 76 total points despite playing setter.

The same pattern appeared internationally. Fourteen of his 17 points during the 2026 VNL came from blocks, showing how effectively Poland could use his size when he was in the front row.

Those numbers sit alongside his primary responsibility as an organizer. During the same period, Komenda captained Lublin through a Polish Cup title, helped the club reach another league final and then operated Poland’s offense during VNL and European Championship title runs.
