The National Collegiate championship is a single-elimination postseason tournament. The field and opening-round structure have changed over time: the bracket used seven teams through 2023, expanded to eight teams in 2024 and 2025, and expanded again to 12 teams in 2026.
For the 2026 championship, the NCAA selected seven automatic qualifiers and five at-large teams. Regional rounds fed into the national semifinals and championship match at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles. Earlier child editions on VolleyBond preserve the format and host that applied in their own season rather than retroactively applying the current bracket.
The 2020 championship is retained as a historical child edition because it was scheduled by the NCAA but canceled during the COVID-19 shutdown. It has no champion, runner-up or match results.
