About Tomasz Fornal

Tomasz Fornal is a Polish outside hitter for Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie and a senior international for the Poland men’s national volleyball team. Born in Kraków in 1997, he came through a highly successful Polish youth generation before establishing himself in the PlusLiga, spending six seasons with Jastrzębski Węgiel and later becoming one of Poland’s regular six-rotation options on the left side.

His senior international record includes silver medals at the 2022 World Championship and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, European titles in 2023 and 2026, and Volleyball Nations League gold medals in 2023, 2025 and 2026. Fornal was named Best Outside Hitter at the 2024 VNL and then MVP of the 2026 edition. At club level, he won three Polish championships with Jastrzębski Węgiel before spending the 2025–26 season with Ziraat Bankkart in Türkiye, where he completed a domestic treble and helped the club earn its first CEV Champions League medal. He returned to Poland in 2026 to join reigning national champion Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie.

Current Polish league records list Fornal at 200 cm and 92 kg with a 360 cm attack reach, while the most established secondary physical-data listings give him a 330 cm block reach and identify him as right-handed. Historical competition profiles have sometimes used slightly different measurements, including a 198 cm height, but the current domestic registration and Volleyball World both list him at 200 cm.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Fornal grew up in Kraków in a family already closely connected to volleyball. He began playing with UKS 22 at Primary School No. 155 and later represented Hutnik Dobry Wynik before moving deeper into Poland’s organized development system. His pathway included the youth structure of PGE Skra Bełchatów and SMS PZPS Spała, the national federation’s sports school that has produced numerous Polish internationals.

Volleyball was also present at home. His father, Marek Fornal, played for Poland and won two Polish championships with Hutnik Kraków, while Tomasz’s older brother Jan also became a professional outside hitter. Fornal has spoken about his father as an early sporting role model and about both brothers wanting to follow the example they had seen growing up.

His youth national-team career became unusually successful. Poland won the U19 European Championship, European Youth Olympic Festival and U19 World Championship in 2015, followed by the U20 European Championship in 2016 and the U21 World Championship in 2017. The core group completed that stretch on a 47-match winning run, giving Fornal a substantial international résumé before he had established himself with the senior national team.

Club Career

Cerrad Czarni Radom: The Start of a Senior Career

Fornal entered the PlusLiga with Cerrad Czarni Radom in 2016 after his development period in Spała. He spent three seasons in Radom, gradually moving from a young prospect into a regular top-flight outside hitter.

The club was also connected to his family history: his father Marek had played for Czarni in the early 1990s. Fornal’s own stay provided the competitive foundation for the next stage of his career, giving him regular senior volleyball while he continued collecting youth international titles and moved toward the senior Poland setup.

By the end of 2018–19, he had become one of the more attractive young Polish outside hitters on the domestic market. Jastrzębski Węgiel signed him in 2019, beginning the club period most closely associated with the first half of his professional career.

Six Seasons with Jastrzębski Węgiel

Fornal joined Jastrzębski Węgiel at 21 and remained there for six seasons, a period in which the club moved from domestic contender to one of Europe’s strongest teams.

The first Polish championship of that era came in 2021. Jastrzębski later added further league titles in 2023 and 2024, making Fornal a three-time Polish champion with the club. The team also won the Polish Super Cup twice and repeatedly reached domestic cup finals.

European progress followed the same upward path. Jastrzębski reached the CEV Champions League final in 2023, where it lost a five-set all-Polish final to ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle. A year later, the club returned to the final, this time losing to Trentino. Those consecutive silver medals established Jastrzębski as a consistent member of Europe’s elite even though the Champions League trophy remained out of reach.

Fornal’s own role expanded during that period. He was named PlusLiga Player of the Season in 2023 and increasingly combined high-level reception responsibility with greater attacking volume and a more prominent role in difficult transition situations.

The final season of his six-year stay produced a particularly strong closing stretch. Jastrzębski won the 2025 Polish Cup after years of near misses, with Fornal scoring 15 points in the final against Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie and receiving the tournament MVP award. The club then reached the Champions League Final Four in Łódź. It did not reach a third consecutive final, but Jastrzębski won the bronze-medal match and Fornal was selected as one of the tournament’s Best Outside Hitters.

His departure had been announced before the Final Four, making the European medal his final result with the club. Jastrzębski’s own farewell summary credited him with three Polish championships, a league silver, two Super Cups, a Polish Cup, two Champions League silver medals and one Champions League bronze across his six seasons.

Ziraat Bankkart: One Season Abroad, Four Major Medals

The 2025–26 season brought the first senior club move outside Poland in Fornal’s career. He joined Ziraat Bankkart Ankara, entering the Turkish Efeler League alongside players such as Nimir Abdel-Aziz and Trévor Clévenot.

His single year in Ankara was dense with silverware. Ziraat defeated Fenerbahçe to win the Turkish Super Cup in October 2025, then beat Galatasaray in the Turkish Cup final in April. Later that month, Ziraat swept the league final series against Galatasaray 3–0 to become Turkish champion.

The Champions League campaign provided another important layer. Ziraat won its pool and advanced through the knockout rounds to the Final Four in Turin. Fornal was named match MVP after a pool-stage road victory over Tours, and the team eventually reached the semifinals without a defeat in the competition.

Its unbeaten run ended against Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie, the club Fornal would join a few weeks later. Ziraat recovered in the third-place match against PGE Projekt Warszawa, coming back from a 2–1 deficit to win in five sets. Fornal scored 14 points, including important late serving contributions, as Ziraat secured the first Champions League medal in club history.

He was subsequently selected as a Best Outside Hitter in the 2026 Champions League Dream Team. The combination of the Turkish Super Cup, Turkish Cup, national championship and Champions League bronze made the season one of the most trophy-heavy of his career, even though his stay abroad lasted only one year.

Return to Poland with Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie

Fornal returned to the Polish league for 2026–27, joining Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie. The move was formally confirmed in June 2026 after months of speculation and placed him with the reigning Polish champions.

The transfer also created an unusual connection with his previous season. Aluron had been the team that eliminated Ziraat in the Champions League semifinal only a month before his move was announced. Fornal therefore went directly from competing against Zawiercie for a place in the European final to becoming part of its next title defense.

He kept the number 21 he had long worn with both club and country. The current league registration lists him at 200 cm, 92 kg and a 360 cm attack reach, while Volleyball World recorded 10 points in his first league appearance of the 2026–27 season against GKS Katowice on 16 October.

National Team Career

A Golden Youth Generation and the Senior Transition

Fornal’s international success predates his senior debut by several years. The Polish generation that included him won major titles at U19, U20 and U21 level and completed its youth cycle without losing across a 47-match run.

He was called into a senior Poland training group in 2018 while still playing for Czarni Radom, but his senior match debut came in May 2019 against Germany. He was then included during the 2019 Volleyball Nations League season as Poland began integrating several players from its successful junior groups into the senior program.

Establishing a Role with Poland

Fornal’s early senior years coincided with intense competition at outside hitter. Poland could select from players such as Michał Kubiak, Wilfredo León, Aleksander Śliwka, Kamil Semeniuk and Bartosz Bednorz, which meant that his route toward a consistent starting role was gradual rather than immediate.

Even so, the medals accumulated. Poland earned VNL bronze and World Cup silver in 2019, VNL silver and European Championship bronze in 2021, and VNL bronze in 2022.

The 2022 World Championship provided his first senior global championship medal. Poland reached the final on home soil before losing to Italy, giving Fornal a World Championship silver at age 25.

His role grew further under Nikola Grbić. Poland won its first Volleyball Nations League title in 2023 and then defeated Italy in Rome to become European champion. Fornal was increasingly valued not simply as a substitute attacker, but as a six-rotation outside hitter capable of handling difficult reception assignments while maintaining pressure in attack and serve.

Best Outside Hitter in the 2024 VNL

Poland finished third in the 2024 Volleyball Nations League, but Fornal’s performance brought one of his first major individual international awards.

He was selected as a Best Outside Hitter in the VNL Dream Team alongside Japan’s Yuki Ishikawa. The award reflected his growing importance in Poland’s preferred lineup and came immediately before the Paris Olympics.

Paris 2024: Injury, Return and Olympic Silver

Fornal’s Olympic tournament began with a significant setback. During Poland’s opening match against Egypt, he suffered a sprain to his left ankle. Medical examinations ruled out a fracture but confirmed ligament damage, making his availability for the rest of the tournament uncertain.

He returned progressively and was back in a major role by the knockout stage. Against Slovenia in the quarterfinal, Fornal produced nine points as Poland ended a long run of Olympic quarterfinal eliminations.

Two days later, he played one of the defining matches of his international career. Poland faced the United States in the semifinal and fell behind 2–1 in sets before recovering to win in five. Fornal contributed 13 points, including 12 kills, despite having been dealing with the ankle injury earlier in the tournament.

The victory sent Poland into its first Olympic men’s volleyball final since 1976. France won the gold-medal match, but Poland’s silver ended a 48-year wait for another Olympic medal in men’s volleyball. Fornal completed the tournament with 36 points despite the injury interruption.

VNL Gold and World Championship Bronze in 2025

Poland returned to the top of the VNL podium in 2025, defeating Italy in straight sets in the final in Ningbo. Fornal contributed throughout the campaign as part of a deep outside-hitter rotation.

Later that year, Poland reached another World Championship semifinal in the Philippines. Italy ended its title challenge, but the team recovered to defeat Czechia in the bronze-medal match, giving Fornal another senior World Championship medal alongside his 2022 silver.

VNL 2026 MVP

The 2026 Volleyball Nations League became the strongest individual senior international tournament of Fornal’s career.

He scored 61 points across seven appearances: 44 in attack, six from blocks and 11 from the service line. His serving was especially important during the Finals. In the championship match against the United States, Fornal scored 15 points and fired five aces as Poland won 3–2.

Poland successfully defended its VNL title and lifted the trophy for the third time overall. Fornal was named tournament MVP, adding the award to his Best Outside Hitter selection from 2024.

Back-to-Back European Champion

Poland’s 2026 international season continued with another European title. The defending champions reached the EuroVolley final against France and won 3–1 in Milan, becoming back-to-back continental champions.

The result also secured Poland’s qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Fornal remained a starting outside hitter in the championship team, completing a summer in which Poland won both the VNL and EuroVolley.

Playing Style & Strengths

Fornal’s role is built around the full set of responsibilities expected from a modern six-rotation outside hitter. His value is not limited to terminal attacking; he receives serve, defends in the backcourt, contributes from the service line and remains available as a high-ball option when the setter has limited choices.

Reception and Six-Rotation Stability

Reception has long been one of the areas that distinguishes Fornal from more attack-heavy wing players. His ability to stay involved in serve receive allows coaches to use him without heavily restructuring the passing formation around him.

That stability became increasingly important as his national-team role grew. At Paris 2024, he handled meaningful reception volume immediately after returning from his ankle injury, while his strongest matches combined passing responsibility with double-digit scoring.

The balance is significant tactically. A six-rotation outside hitter must often receive a difficult serve and then transition immediately into an approach for the next attack. Fornal’s game allows him to remain useful through both phases instead of needing to be protected extensively in the backcourt.

Attacking Range

At 200 cm with a current listed attack reach of 360 cm, Fornal has enough height and reach to score against established blocks, but his attacking game is not based on raw elevation alone.

He is effective attacking sharp cross-court angles, using the block and changing pace when a full-power swing is not available. Those skills become especially valuable in transition, when the setter may be off the net and the opposing block already knows where the ball is likely to go.

His attacking responsibility has grown over time. Early in his national-team career, he was frequently used as a supporting outside hitter within deeper rotations; by the Paris Olympic cycle and the 2026 VNL, he had become capable of carrying substantial scoring stretches while still handling reception.

Serving Pressure

Fornal’s serve has become another important source of direct pressure.

The 2026 VNL provides the clearest recent example. He produced 11 aces in seven matches and five in the final alone against the United States. A productive serve does more than create direct points: it can remove the opposing middle attack and make Poland’s block-defense system easier to organize on the next contact.

His serving also contributed during Ziraat’s 2026 Champions League bronze-medal match, when late pressure from the line helped the Turkish club force a fifth set and eventually secure its first medal in the competition.

Blocking and Backcourt Defense

Outside hitters do not carry the same blocking workload as middles, but Fornal’s size allows him to contribute effectively at the net. He can close against opposing wing attackers and has enough reach to turn strong positioning into direct block points.

His defensive involvement is equally important. Because he remains on court through all six rotations, Fornal can contribute digs and emergency coverage that do not appear in simple scoring totals but help extend rallies. This is part of why he can remain valuable on nights when his attack is not the main source of Poland’s points.

The sequence from the 2024 VNL through the 2026 VNL reflects Fornal’s transition from an established international into one of Poland’s most heavily used outside hitters. His 2026 VNL MVP award was the first major senior international MVP of his career.

Personal Life & Public Profile

Volleyball runs through the Fornal family. Tomasz’s father, Marek, represented Poland and won two national championships with Hutnik Kraków, while his older brother Jan also became a professional outside hitter. Tomasz has described his father as the first major sporting example he wanted to follow, even though his own career eventually developed on a much larger international stage.

Fornal has also developed a public profile beyond match competition. In 2025, Polish sportswear brand 4F announced him as an official ambassador. The relationship expanded from endorsement into product collaboration, with Fornal participating in the creation of a limited streetwear collection. A second 4F x Tomasz Fornal collection followed in July 2026 and included a special “FORNAL SIZE” range designed for taller builds and oversized fits.

The partnership is a meaningful part of his public identity because it involves direct design collaboration rather than simply appearing in advertising. Readers can view the current collaboration on the official 4F Tomasz Fornal collection page.

Where Is Tomasz Fornal Playing Now?

As of October 2026, Tomasz Fornal plays for Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie in Poland’s Tauron Liga. He wears number 21 and is listed by the league at 200 cm, 92 kg and a 360 cm attack reach.

His move to Zawiercie followed a single season with Ziraat Bankkart in Türkiye. Fornal returned to Poland as a Turkish league, cup and super cup winner and a Champions League bronze medalist, joining an Aluron side that entered 2026–27 as the defending Polish champion.

He also remains an active member of the Poland men’s national team and continues to wear number 21 internationally. His most recent national-team season produced two major titles: Poland successfully defended the VNL crown in August, with Fornal named tournament MVP, and then retained the European Championship in September.

The 2026–27 Polish league began on 16 October. In his first match of the campaign against GKS Katowice, Fornal scored 10 points — eight in attack, one from the block and one on serve. The sample is too small to represent his season form, but it confirmed the beginning of his competitive return to the Polish league after his year in Ankara.
