About Jan Martínez Franchi

Jan Martínez Franchi is an Argentine outside hitter whose career has been built around serve reception, defensive reliability and tactical versatility rather than the size advantage typical of many international wing spikers. Standing 190 cm, he has competed professionally in Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, Poland and France, became an Olympian at Paris 2024 and helped Argentina win the 2023 South American Championship.

The 2026–27 season opens another important chapter. After two years with Tourcoing Lille Métropole and a French Cup title in 2025, Martínez returned to Brazil to join Vôlei Renata in Campinas. It is his second spell in Brazilian club volleyball following his 2019–20 season in Rio de Janeiro, but he returns as a significantly more experienced player: an Olympian, a senior continental champion and an outside hitter with six seasons of European volleyball behind him.

His Olympic appearance also completed a distinctive family story. His father, Esteban Martínez, won bronze with Argentina at Seoul 1988 and competed in four Olympic Games across indoor and beach volleyball, while his sister Morena represented Argentina at Rio 2016. Jan had spoken publicly about wanting to follow them to the Olympics years before finally doing so in Paris.

Martínez is primarily an outside hitter and is listed in that position by Argentina in the 2026 Volleyball Nations League. His defensive range has nevertheless produced some unusual roster classifications during his international career: an individual Volleyball World entry for the 2023 Olympic Qualification Tournament listed him as a libero even though Argentina’s tournament roster identified him as an outside hitter. His established role remains that of a reception-oriented outside hitter.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Martínez was born in Buenos Aires and developed at Ciudad Vóley, one of the important clubs in the Argentine capital. Volleyball was already deeply embedded in his family long before he began building his own international career.

His father, Esteban “Mono” Martínez, is one of the more unusual Olympians in Argentine volleyball history. Esteban competed indoors at Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988, winning the bronze medal in Seoul, before later representing Argentina in beach volleyball at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Jan’s older sister Morena Martínez also reached the Olympics, appearing with Argentina’s women’s indoor team at Rio 2016.

That family history gave Jan a particularly clear benchmark. In a CEV feature about the Martínez family’s Olympic volleyball story, he spoke in 2020 about wanting to become the next member of the family to reach the Games. Tokyo 2020 ultimately came without him on Argentina’s final roster, but the goal remained relevant through another Olympic cycle. Four years later, he made Argentina’s team for Paris 2024.

His own progress had already been substantial before that senior Olympic breakthrough. Martínez emerged in Argentina’s youth national-team system as a technically complete outside hitter rather than a player built principally around height and terminal attacking power.

At the 2015 FIVB U19 World Championship, hosted in Argentina, the home team reached the final and finished with the silver medal. Martínez was selected as one of the tournament’s Best Outside Spikers. The award was an early indication that his combination of reception and attacking could translate against the strongest players of his age group.

In 2016, Argentina won the South American U21 Championship and Martínez was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He also formed part of the U23 generation that won the Pan American Cup that year before delivering an even larger result in 2017: the FIVB U23 World Championship title.

The sequence gave Martínez an unusually deep international education before his senior club career had fully moved abroad. By his early twenties, he had already played important matches as an outside hitter in several age categories and had been asked to carry both reception and scoring responsibility.

Club Career

Ciudad Vóley and a First Senior Title

Martínez entered senior volleyball with Ciudad Vóley, the club where his development had begun. His years there coincided with Ciudad becoming increasingly competitive at the highest level of Argentine volleyball.

The most important trophy from that period arrived in October 2017. Ciudad defeated UPCN San Juan in five sets to win the Copa ACLAV, the first title in the club’s history in that competition. For a young Martínez, it provided meaningful senior-level success before his move to one of the most established championship projects in the country.

Ciudad also gave him the environment in which his identity as an outside hitter became clearer. Rather than being developed solely as an attacker, he took on the full passing responsibilities of the position — a theme that would remain important as he moved into more physical leagues.

Bolívar and a Breakthrough 2018–19 Season

Martínez joined Bolívar Vóley for 2018–19. The move placed him in a roster expected to compete for both Argentine and continental trophies and gave him experience alongside established international players.

The season produced two major titles. Bolívar won the inaugural Copa Libertadores de Voleibol, defeating Sesc-RJ in straight sets in the Final Four title match. Martínez was selected as one of the competition’s two Best Outside Hitters, alongside Lipe Fonteles.

Bolívar also won the Argentine national league championship that season. For Martínez, the combination of a domestic league title, a new continental competition and an individual outside-hitter award made 2018–19 a clear transition point between being a promising young national-team player and an established senior professional.

The next step was a move outside Argentina.

First Brazilian Experience with Sesc-RJ

For 2019–20, Martínez joined Sesc-RJ in Rio de Janeiro, beginning his first full club season abroad. The move exposed him to Brazilian volleyball’s combination of serving pressure, physical attackers and high-tempo play.

That period would later become relevant again. When Martínez signed with Vôlei Renata in 2026, he was not entering the Brazilian Superliga for the first time; he was returning to a volleyball environment he already knew, but after six additional seasons of professional development in Europe.

Greenyard Maaseik and the Move to Europe

Martínez moved to Greenyard Maaseik in 2020, beginning his European career in Belgium. The transition was significant both professionally and personally. Maaseik was his first European club and placed him into CEV competition while he was still working toward his first Olympic appearance.

The Belgian team reached the later stages of the CEV Cup during his first season. Domestically, Maaseik finished second in the Belgian league in 2020–21 and third in 2021–22 rather than winning the championship, an important distinction from some older summaries of his career.

Those two seasons strengthened Martínez’s value as a reception-oriented outside hitter. European club volleyball regularly matched him against taller blocks, increasing the importance of first-contact quality, attack selection and the ability to score without depending exclusively on hitting over the block.

By 2022, he was ready for one of the most demanding domestic competitions in the sport.

Two Seasons with Trefl Gdańsk

Trefl Gdańsk signed Martínez for the 2022–23 PlusLiga season. Poland presented another increase in physical demands, particularly for a 190 cm outside hitter required to receive at a high level while attacking against large, organized blocks.

Martínez adapted well enough that Trefl renewed him for a second season. When the extension was announced in February 2023, he described Poland as a league in which he had wanted to remain longer and Trefl as a club where he felt particularly comfortable with the style of play.

His two years in Gdańsk did not produce the kind of headline trophy that came with Bolívar or later Tourcoing, but they added an important layer to his career. Playing regularly in PlusLiga confirmed that his technical profile could remain effective in a league where physical size alone often creates substantial pressure on outside hitters.

French Cup Success with Tourcoing

Martínez moved to Tourcoing Lille Métropole in 2024 and spent two seasons in France.

The defining club result came in March 2025. Tourcoing defeated Montpellier in a five-set Coupe de France final in Chartres, winning 25–23, 23–25, 25–22, 22–25, 15–11. It was Tourcoing’s second French Cup and gave Martínez another domestic trophy in a third country.

His Tourcoing period also extended the European portion of his career to six consecutive seasons across Belgium, Poland and France. By the end of 2025–26, the player preparing to return to Brazil had accumulated a much broader tactical background than the one who first left South America in 2020.

Return to Brazil with Vôlei Renata

Vôlei Renata announced Martínez as its first new signing for the 2026–27 season. The move brought him back to Brazil seven years after his first season there and reunited him with familiar Argentine figures, including opposite Bruno Lima and head coach Horacio Dileo.

In Vôlei Renata’s official announcement of his signing, Martínez explained that conversations with Lima and Dileo helped make the decision easier. He also emphasized the strength of the Brazilian league and his intention to bring his own playing identity to an ambitious Campinas roster.

The timing of the transfer is notable. Vôlei Renata entered 2026–27 after a highly successful period and built a roster containing players such as Bruno Rezende, Bruno Lima, Douglas Souza and Éder Carbonera. Martínez arrives not as a developmental prospect but as an experienced six-rotation option capable of contributing in reception, defense and attack.

National Team Career

Youth Medals and Individual Recognition

Martínez’s national-team career is rooted in a successful Argentine generation that produced several future senior internationals.

The 2015 U19 World Championship was one of the first major indicators of that group’s potential. Argentina reached the gold-medal match before finishing second to Poland, while Martínez earned Best Outside Spiker recognition.

A year later, Argentina won the South American U21 Championship. Martínez was named MVP, a notable award for an outside hitter whose contribution was built across reception, defense and attack rather than one overwhelming scoring category.

Argentina also won the U23 Pan American Cup in 2016. The progression culminated in 2017 when the U23 team became world champion, defeating Russia in the final. That title placed Martínez among a group of young Argentine players who would gradually move into the senior national-team structure.

From Pan American Success to the Senior Core

Martínez became increasingly involved with the senior national team in the late 2010s. Argentina won the 2018 Pan American Cup and then claimed gold at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima.

The Lima title remains one of the important senior medals on Martínez’s résumé. Argentina defeated Cuba in the final to finish first, and the tournament helped establish several members of that generation as serious options around the country’s established Olympic core.

Martínez was also part of Argentina’s 2019 South American Championship campaign, which ended with silver behind Brazil.

His route into the Olympic team took longer. Argentina won bronze at Tokyo 2020, but Martínez was not among the 12 players selected for that tournament. Matías Sánchez, Luciano De Cecco, Facundo Conte, Agustín Loser, Santiago Danani and Bruno Lima were among the players on the Tokyo roster, while Martínez continued working toward the following Olympic cycle.

South American Champion in 2023

One of Argentina’s most important senior achievements of the post-Tokyo period came at the 2023 South American Championship in Recife.

Argentina defeated Brazil 3–0 in the decisive match and won the continental championship for the first time since 1964. Brazil had controlled the tournament historically and had won every edition it entered across that span.

Martínez was part of the Argentine squad during this period and remained one of the outside-hitting options around a group that included Luciano Vicentín, Luciano Palonsky, Facundo Conte and Manuel Armoa.

The title added a senior continental championship to the Pan American gold already on his résumé and came during the same Olympic cycle in which Argentina was attempting to secure its place at Paris 2024.

Olympic Debut at Paris 2024

Martínez finally became an Olympian at Paris 2024.

Argentina selected him as No. 3 and an outside hitter. He appeared during all three of the team’s pool-stage matches against the United States, Japan and Germany, scoring seven attack points across the tournament.

His role was not built around being Argentina’s highest-volume scorer. Reception and defensive balance were important parts of why he fit the roster. Against Japan, for example, he handled a substantial share of Argentina’s first-contact workload while also contributing five attacking points.

Argentina did not reproduce its Tokyo medal run and exited after the preliminary phase, but for Martínez the tournament carried a separate personal meaning. Four years after publicly discussing his desire to follow his father and sister into the Olympics, he had finally done so.

World Championship and the 2026 Cycle

Martínez remained in Argentina’s senior program after Paris. He was included at the 2025 Men’s World Championship and continued into the 2026 national-team season under Horacio Dileo.

During the 2026 Volleyball Nations League, Martínez remained No. 3 and was listed as an outside hitter. He accumulated 38 points in the competition: 32 in attack, four from blocks and two from serves.

Those numbers reflect the changing ways Argentina used him. He did not carry the same attacking volume in every match, but when given a larger role he remained capable of providing points rather than functioning only as a defensive substitution. His broader value continued to come from combining that scoring capability with first-contact stability.

Argentina then moved into the 2026 South American Championship in Rio de Janeiro, a tournament carrying direct qualification implications for Los Angeles 2028. Martínez remained part of the squad as Argentina reached the decisive final match against Brazil. Brazil won 3–0 and reclaimed the continental title, leaving Argentina with silver.

At 28, Martínez therefore entered the 2026–27 club season still fully connected to Argentina’s senior international plans.

Playing Style & Strengths

Martínez’s game begins with a basic physical reality: 190 cm is modest for an international men’s outside hitter. He cannot build his effectiveness around simply reaching higher than opposing blocks.

Instead, his profile depends heavily on the parts of the position that happen before and after the attack itself.

Serve reception is central. Martínez has spent much of his career as a player trusted to absorb first-contact responsibility, allowing teams to protect more offense-oriented teammates or stabilize rotations against strong serving runs. His body control and ability to get behind the ball are particularly important because a smaller outside hitter has less margin to compensate for poor transition positioning at the net.

His defensive range is another reason coaches have been able to use him flexibly. Current Argentina and Volleyball World listings identify him as an outside hitter, but an individual player record from the 2023 Olympic Qualification Tournament classified him as a libero. Whatever the administrative reason for that listing, it fits a broader reality: back-row defense is a meaningful part of Martínez’s value.

In attack, he relies more on timing, speed and shot choice than on overpowering the block. His 333 cm recorded spike reach gives him enough elevation to compete internationally, but his efficiency depends on using the block rather than ignoring it. Fast approaches, attacking off hands, changing directions and recognizing defensive space become important against middle blockers and opposite blockers significantly taller than he is.

His Paris 2024 performance against Japan illustrated the two-sided nature of his role. Martínez received extensively while also providing attacking points, the kind of balance required from an outside hitter who may not be the first offensive option.

The 2026 VNL showed that he can still expand his scoring responsibility when needed. His tournament total included attack, block and serve points rather than coming solely from front-row swings.

Martínez also offers tactical flexibility in roster construction. A coach can use him as a conventional six-rotation outside hitter, prioritize him for a reception-heavy assignment or use his defensive profile to alter the balance of a lineup. That versatility has helped him remain relevant across very different club systems in South America and Europe.

His career is therefore not unusual because he occasionally performs libero-like duties. It is unusual because he has sustained a genuine international outside-hitting career at 190 cm while remaining valuable enough in reception and defense to give coaches options beyond the standard interpretation of the position.

Major Achievements

Martínez has won significant titles at youth, senior national-team and club level. His résumé is particularly varied: a World Championship age-group title, Pan American gold, a South American senior championship and domestic or continental club trophies in Argentina and France.

Winning an MVP award at the 2016 South American U21 Championship is especially notable because Martínez’s career has generally been built around all-around value rather than a profile dominated by raw point production.

His selection among the Best Outside Hitters of the inaugural Copa Libertadores in 2019 came at a more advanced stage of his development and accompanied a tournament title with Bolívar.

Volleyball Family & Life Away from the Court

The clearest personal context around Martínez is his family’s unusual Olympic history.

His father Esteban competed in four Olympic Games across two disciplines. He played indoor volleyball at Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988, winning bronze in Seoul, then transitioned to beach volleyball and returned to the Games at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000.

Jan’s sister Morena Martínez was also an Argentina international. She played libero and represented the country at Rio 2016, when Argentina’s women qualified for the Olympic volleyball tournament for the first time.

Jan’s path therefore developed inside a family that understood elite international volleyball unusually well. Yet his route was not identical to either of theirs. His father’s career moved from indoor volleyball to beach volleyball, Morena specialized as a libero, and Jan developed as a reception-oriented outside hitter.

The family connection also makes his Paris 2024 appearance more meaningful than a simple line on his tournament history. In 2020, while playing for Maaseik, he spoke openly about hoping to become an Olympian after watching both his father and sister do so. He missed the Tokyo roster, remained with the national-team program and eventually reached that goal in Paris.

His public social presence is relatively focused on volleyball. His verified Instagram account, @janmartinezf, follows his club and national-team career rather than functioning as a separate entertainment or lifestyle brand.

Where Is Jan Martínez Franchi Playing Now?

Jan Martínez Franchi is signed with Vôlei Renata for the 2026–27 season, returning to Brazil after two years with Tourcoing in France.

Vôlei Renata announced him in June 2026 as the first new reinforcement for its upcoming campaign. The club is based in Campinas and competes in Brazil’s top-level Superliga as well as the Campeonato Paulista and several national and international competitions.

The transfer places Martínez in an unusually experienced group. The roster includes setters Bruno Rezende and Cristiano Torelli, opposite Bruno Lima, outside hitter Douglas Souza and middle blocker Éder Carbonera, while Argentine coach Horacio Dileo leads the team.

For Martínez, the move also restores several familiar connections. He already knew Bruno Lima from the Argentina national team and had worked with Dileo internationally. He described both as people he consulted before accepting the move.

His arrival at the club was delayed by Argentina duty. Vôlei Renata began its 2026–27 domestic schedule while Martínez and Dileo were with the national team, with the club stating that Martínez would join the squad after the September South American Championship.

Argentina finished that tournament second behind Brazil on September 20. The transition therefore moves Martínez directly from a full international summer into a new club environment as Vôlei Renata’s domestic season gets underway.

The totals do not describe a player used as Argentina’s primary scorer throughout the entire competition. His role varied between matches and stages, but the scoring distribution shows that his contribution extended beyond reception and back-row work.

He also began the 2026 national-team season strongly before the VNL. In Argentina’s May preparation series against Venezuela, Martínez was selected as the MVP of the first match, giving the new coaching cycle under Horacio Dileo an encouraging start.

The larger current picture is more important than any single match: Martínez remained an international outside-hitting option through the VNL and South American Championship while simultaneously preparing for a major club change back to Brazil.
