Player Overview

About Hanna Orthmann

Hanna Orthmann is a German opposite who joined Osaka Marvelous in 2026 after spending most of her senior career as an outside hitter. Born on 3 October 1998 in Lüdinghausen, Germany, she has represented the German senior national team since 2016 and built her club career across the Bundesliga, Italy’s Serie A1, Türkiye’s Sultanlar Ligi and Japan’s SV.League.

Orthmann won the CEV Challenge Cup with Saugella Monza in 2019 and the CEV Cup with the same club in 2021. A serious knee injury suffered at EuroVolley 2023 then removed her from competition for more than a year, but she returned to club volleyball in 2024 and to the German national team in 2025. By 2026, she had reached 107 senior internationals and helped Germany advance to the EuroVolley quarterfinals before beginning a new club chapter in Japan.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Orthmann grew up in Lüdinghausen, a town in North Rhine-Westphalia. Volleyball was not her first competitive sport. In an interview with her hometown’s official marketing platform, she explained that she initially played football because her father coached the sport and her older brother was also a football player. She was the only girl on her boys’ team for a period, but age-group regulations eventually forced her to choose between moving to a girls’ football team or trying something different. Her brother had meanwhile discovered volleyball through a school program, which helped steer her toward the sport.

She began playing volleyball at SC Union 08 Lüdinghausen. At 15, Orthmann moved into the volleyball development system at USC Münster, where she played in the 2. Bundesliga before progressing toward the senior team. Her CEV biography records her first Bundesliga appearance with Münster in January 2016.

That period also shaped her positional development. Germany’s federation later noted that Orthmann was used mainly as an opposite in youth and junior competition before gradually taking on serve-reception responsibilities and becoming an outside hitter. That background is relevant again later in her career: after years primarily identified internationally as an outside hitter, Osaka Marvelous signed her specifically as an opposite in 2026.

Orthmann was already playing senior international volleyball before leaving Germany at club level. At 17, she made her German senior-team debut during the 2016 World Grand Prix in Ningbo, China.

Club Career

From Münster to a Long Italian Chapter

Orthmann’s professional foundation came at USC Münster, where she progressed from the club’s development environment into Bundesliga volleyball between 2014 and 2017.

Her first move abroad arrived in 2017, when she joined Saugella Monza in Italy’s Serie A1. The transfer came before her 19th birthday and became the longest continuous club period of her senior career.

Monza gave Orthmann both regular high-level competition and her first major European trophies. During the 2018–19 Challenge Cup, she developed into an important scoring and serving option. In one round-of-16 home victory over Kamnik, CEV recorded Orthmann as the match’s top scorer with 19 points and five aces.

Monza eventually completed the run by defeating Aydın BBSK in the final and winning the 2019 CEV Challenge Cup, the club’s first European trophy.

Orthmann remained with Monza as the club moved into stronger European competition. A 2020 contract announcement described her as one of the team’s stronger scorers and servers over the preceding seasons and extended her association with the club.

The final season of that Monza chapter delivered another major European title. In March 2021, Saugella Monza defeated Galatasaray across the CEV Cup final to win the 2021 CEV Cup. Orthmann was part of the championship roster and recorded an ace in the decisive second leg in Istanbul.

Scandicci and the First Move to Türkiye

After four seasons with Monza, Orthmann joined Savino Del Bene Scandicci for 2021–22. Her stay was relatively short, but it kept her in Serie A1 and placed her in another squad competing in Europe.

CEV registration data shows Orthmann with Scandicci during the 2022 Challenge Cup campaign before her license was released on 19 January 2022. She then left Italy during the season to join Türk Hava Yolları in Istanbul.

Türkiye added another elite domestic league to her experience. Orthmann remained with THY through 2022–23, playing both domestically and in European competition. CEV records list her with the Istanbul club in the 2022 and 2023 European Cup cycles.

Novara, the 2023 Injury and a Lost Season

Orthmann signed for Igor Gorgonzola Novara ahead of 2023–24, bringing her back to the Italian league. She never had the opportunity to begin that first season normally.

On 17 August 2023, during Germany’s opening EuroVolley match against Greece, Orthmann injured her right knee. Novara’s subsequent medical update confirmed tears to both the cruciate ligament and meniscus and stated that the recovery would require several months.

The injury became the most disruptive point of her senior career. Orthmann missed the entire 2023–24 club season, and Novara later described the absence as lasting almost a full year.

The club retained its commitment to her during the rehabilitation process. In July 2024, Novara effectively reintroduced Orthmann as a new signing for the coming season, explaining that she was finally ready to complete her recovery and join the squad after the year-long interruption.

Her return to active club volleyball came in 2024–25, but the Novara chapter ended earlier than originally expected. On 17 December 2024, the club announced a mutual termination of her contract.

Back to Türk Hava Yolları

Orthmann returned to Türk Hava Yolları in January 2025. The move restored her to a familiar environment in Istanbul and gave her a clearer route to regular volleyball after the long rehabilitation and shorter Novara comeback.

She stayed with THY into 2025–26 and returned to European competition wearing number 12. CEV’s club history records her with THY for the 2026 European Cup season.

That period was also important because it overlapped with her full return to Germany’s national team. Rather than simply completing rehabilitation, Orthmann was again playing international tournaments and moving toward the workload expected of an established senior player.

A New Role with Osaka Marvelous

In August 2026, Orthmann made the first move of her career outside Europe. Osaka Marvelous announced that she had joined the club effective 1 August 2026, assigning her number 12.

The positional designation was particularly notable. Although Orthmann had spent most of her established senior career as an outside hitter, Osaka registered her as an opposite. The club highlighted her ability to control difficult balls near the net and still turn awkward situations into scoring opportunities.

Orthmann described Japan as a completely new chapter and said she was looking forward to experiencing the league, culture and fan environment for the first time. Osaka entered 2026–27 as the defending SV.League champion, giving her another high-expectation club setting after years in Italy and Türkiye.

National Team Career

Orthmann’s senior international career began unusually early. After representing Germany in youth and junior competition, she made her senior debut at the 2016 World Grand Prix in China when she was 17.

Germany initially knew her background as an opposite, but she developed into a reception-capable outside hitter at senior level. That transition allowed her to contribute both as an attacker and in first contact, and number 12 eventually became closely associated with her international career.

She represented Germany through several European Championships and World Championship cycles. Her tournament record includes the 2018 and 2022 World Championships, while her club also highlighted her selection in the dream team as a best outside hitter at the January 2020 European Olympic qualification tournament.

Orthmann was one of Germany’s important scorers in the years immediately before her 2023 injury. During the 2022 VNL, Volleyball World recorded multiple high-scoring matches, including 23 points against the Netherlands, 22 against South Korea and 21 against Poland. Her role combined left-side attacking with the reception responsibilities that had become part of her senior game.

The EuroVolley 2023 Injury

EuroVolley 2023 was supposed to carry special significance for Orthmann. She was one of CEV’s tournament ambassadors, and part of the championship was being staged in Germany. Instead, her tournament ended during the first set of Germany’s opening match against Greece.

Germany’s federation initially announced that knee problems had ruled her out of the rest of the championship. Novara’s subsequent diagnosis established the full severity: a torn cruciate ligament and meniscus in her right knee.

The timing extended the impact beyond one tournament. Orthmann missed the entire following club season and was unavailable during a period in which Germany pursued qualification for Paris 2024. Her recovery therefore represented not merely a short interruption but a reset in both her club and international careers.

Returning to Germany in 2025

Orthmann finally made her competitive national-team comeback during the 2025 Volleyball Nations League. In Germany’s five-set victory over Canada in July, the DVV confirmed that she had returned to the national side after her long injury absence.

She then made Germany’s roster for the 2025 World Championship. Against Vietnam in the pool stage, Orthmann contributed 14 points, including two aces and one block, while attacking at 50% as Germany secured passage to the knockout phase.

The World Championship mattered beyond the individual stat line. It showed that two years after the EuroVolley injury, Orthmann was again capable of starting and carrying a meaningful two-way role for Germany at a major global tournament.

EuroVolley 2026

Orthmann remained part of the German program in 2026, although another injury kept her out of that year’s VNL. Germany’s federation identified her as a returning player when she rejoined the team for the final EuroVolley preparation camp in August.

She made the final 14-player roster and resumed her number 12 outside-hitter role. Germany recovered from a difficult start to the tournament and defeated Belgium 3–2 in the round of 16 to reach the quarterfinals.

The run ended against Türkiye on 3 September, when Germany lost 3–1 in Istanbul. By the end of the tournament, the DVV listed Orthmann with 107 senior international appearances, underlining the length of her national-team career despite the extended injury interruption.

Playing Style & Strengths

Orthmann’s technical identity has changed with her roles. For much of her senior career, she operated as a six-rotation outside hitter with meaningful reception responsibility; with Osaka Marvelous, she has moved back toward the opposite position that was familiar from her youth.

Her attacking power has been a consistent part of both versions of her game. The German federation has described her as a tall, forceful attacker, while Osaka’s 2026 introduction emphasized her ability to maintain control around the net and score even when contacting the ball from difficult body positions. At 188 cm with a CEV-listed spike reach of 302 cm, she has the physical profile to attack above the block but has also developed enough variation to play through different systems.

Serving has repeatedly produced direct value. During Monza’s 2018–19 Challenge Cup run, Orthmann recorded five aces and 19 points in a three-set win over Perg, then four aces and a match-high 15 points against Kamnik. Monza later described her as one of its stronger servers during her early Serie A1 years.

The more distinctive part of her development is the relationship between scoring and reception. Orthmann was used mainly as an opposite in Germany’s youth setup before adding reception duties and becoming a senior outside hitter. That meant learning to transition from first contact into attack rather than beginning every rally as a dedicated right-side scorer.

Her current Osaka role may shift that balance again. Playing opposite can place greater emphasis on right-side and back-row scoring while reducing the amount of serve reception she is asked to handle. Because she already has extensive experience in both role profiles, the move is less a completely new position than a return to an earlier part of her volleyball development.

The 2023 knee injury also adds an important physical context. By 2025, Orthmann had recovered sufficiently to return to international competition and contribute at the World Championship, but her post-injury career has involved rebuilding match rhythm rather than simply resuming the uninterrupted trajectory she had before EuroVolley 2023.

Personal Life & Interests

Orthmann’s connection to volleyball began partly through her family. Her father coached football, while her brother initially played football before discovering volleyball through school. Orthmann followed him into the sport after her own youth football pathway reached the point where she could no longer continue with the boys’ team in Lüdinghausen.

Her brother Felix also went on to play competitive volleyball. In an earlier Volleyball Bundesliga interview, he described their parents as recreational volleyball players and noted that volleyball was already present within the wider family.

CEV’s EuroVolley feature also offered a lighter picture of Orthmann away from competition. She named board games among the things she enjoys in her free time, chose chocolate as her favorite food and described home as her favorite place. She also explained that number 12 has stayed with her because it was the number she grew up wearing.

That number has followed her through much of her professional and international career and remains her number with both Germany and Osaka Marvelous.

Where Is Hanna Orthmann Playing Now?

As of October 2026, Hanna Orthmann plays for Osaka Marvelous in Japan’s SV.League Women.

The club officially announced her arrival in August 2026 and stated that the transfer took effect on 1 August. Orthmann wears number 12 and is listed by Osaka as an opposite.

The move is her first club experience in Japan after spending the previous decade in Germany, Italy and Türkiye. In her announcement, Orthmann described joining Osaka as a new career chapter and said she was looking forward to learning from Japanese volleyball and culture while contributing to a club coming off a strong domestic season.

She also remains part of Germany’s senior national-team pool. The federation’s October 2026 roster lists Orthmann with Osaka Marvelous and credits her with 107 senior international appearances as of 4 September.

Her roles now differ by team: Osaka lists her as an opposite, while Germany continues to identify and deploy her as an outside hitter. That duality reflects a career that began with opposite responsibilities in the youth system before Orthmann developed into one of Germany’s established reception attackers.
