About Leana Grozer

Leana Grozer is a German outside hitter for Laica Cioccolato UYBA Busto Arsizio and a member of the Germany women’s national team. Born on 23 April 2007 in Moers, she grew up around elite volleyball through her father, longtime German international Georg Grozer, but reached senior international level unusually early in her own right: Grozer made her Germany debut at 16 during the 2023 Volleyball Nations League.

Her development has included a position evolution from opposite in Germany’s youth teams to a reception-playing outside hitter, a German championship with SSC Palmberg Schwerin in 2025, and a move to Italy’s Serie A1 in 2026. She was named Germany’s Young Player of the Year in 2025 and became one of the central figures in Germany’s run to the EuroVolley 2026 quarterfinals, scoring 28 points in the five-set round-of-16 win over Belgium.

Early Life & Volleyball Beginnings

Grozer was born in Moers and grew up in a family where high-level volleyball was part of everyday life. Her father, Georg Grozer, has represented Germany for well over a decade and played at the highest levels of European club volleyball, while her grandfather Georg Grozer senior was also an international player. Leana has described being around volleyball halls from infancy and watching her father’s professional career at close range. In a later CEV feature, she said that seeing the sport as part of daily family life made a professional volleyball career feel natural rather than remote.

Her own development began in Moers before continuing at TV Gladbeck. German federation records place her with Gladbeck in national youth-selection activity by 2021, while later career records trace the next stage through the federal training program at BSP MTV Stuttgart. Dyn’s player profile lists Moerser SC, TV Gladbeck and BSP MTV Stuttgart as the main steps before her move into Bundesliga volleyball.

Grozer initially developed as an opposite. At the 2022 European U17 Championship, CEV still listed her on the right side, and she responded with one of the strongest scoring tournaments of her age group. She finished with 217 points in 12 matches, the highest total in the competition, as Germany took bronze. CEV also selected her as Best Opposite in the tournament Dream Team.

That tournament followed an early individual breakthrough in January 2022. At a WEVZA U17 qualifying event, Grozer scored 83 points in five matches and was named tournament MVP during what the German federation described as her first international assignment. The DVV report already identified the scoring ability that would become central to her game.

Club Career

Stuttgart Development and the Move to Schwerin

Grozer spent the 2022–23 season at BSP MTV Stuttgart, where she moved closer to senior competition while remaining part of Germany’s youth-development structure. The next step arrived quickly.

In summer 2023, at 16, she joined SSC Palmberg Schwerin and signed her first professional contract. Schwerin later recalled that Grozer had arrived from the federal training center in Stuttgart and rapidly developed from a young prospect into an important first-team option. The club’s 2025 contract announcement also highlighted her jumping ability and powerful attacking as defining parts of her early senior development.

Grozer’s first Bundesliga season ended with Schwerin reaching the 2024 championship final against Allianz MTV Stuttgart. The series went to a decisive fifth match, with Stuttgart winning 3–1 in Schwerin to retain the title. The result gave Grozer a German championship silver medal during her first full season at the senior professional level.

German Champion with SSC Palmberg Schwerin

Her second season marked a larger change in responsibility. Grozer increasingly became part of Schwerin’s regular outside-hitter rotation rather than simply a young option behind experienced players.

The 2024–25 campaign ended with Schwerin finishing first in the regular season and then completing a dominant playoff run. In the championship series against Dresdner SC, Schwerin won the opening two matches in straight sets before recovering from two sets down in Game 3 to win 3–2 and complete a 3–0 series sweep.

Grozer contributed in the deciding match, including an important ace late in the first set, as Schwerin secured its first German championship since 2018. The Volleyball Bundesliga final report confirmed the club’s 13th German title and the first senior league championship of Grozer’s career.

By this point her role had expanded well beyond that of a development player. Schwerin extended her contract in April 2025, with Grozer explaining that the coaching environment, teammates, supporters and proximity to her family were important reasons for staying.

The title-winning season also changed expectations around her. During the following campaign, Grozer spoke about experiencing greater pressure after her breakthrough year but emphasized the need to remain patient with her own development. Volleyball Bundesliga reporting also highlighted her serving as one of the qualities that had become increasingly recognizable in domestic competition.

Champions League Experience and the 2025–26 Season

Schwerin’s championship brought Grozer into the CEV Champions League, adding regular matches against elite European opposition to her domestic workload.

During the 2025–26 European campaign, she became one of Schwerin’s primary attacking options. UYBA’s later signing announcement described Grozer as her team’s leading Champions League scorer and noted multiple 20-plus-point performances across the season.

A December 2025 CEV profile captured the areas she was actively trying to improve at that stage. Grozer identified reception stability as one priority and described wanting to become more aggressive and intelligent in attack, with better angles, decision-making and variation against stronger blocks.

Schwerin did not repeat as German champion in 2026. The club reached the Bundesliga playoff semifinals before losing to VfB Suhl Lotto Thüringen, ending the domestic season with bronze.

First Move Abroad: UYBA Busto Arsizio

On 16 April 2026, UYBA Busto Arsizio announced that Grozer would join the club for the 2026–27 Serie A1 season. It was the first overseas club move of her career and placed her in one of the deepest women’s leagues in volleyball.

The transfer also had an unusual family connection. UYBA noted that Georg Grozer’s wife, Helena Havelková, had been an important player for Busto during the club’s successful 2012 era. The club said Havelková’s descriptions of Busto, its supporters and its identity helped Grozer become familiar with the environment before making her decision.

UYBA assigned Grozer number 19 and registered her as an outside hitter. Her official club page describes her game around explosive attacking and a powerful jump serve while also presenting the move as the next stage in her transition from a leading young Bundesliga player to full-time Serie A1 competition.

Her start in Italy immediately brought a heavy scoring role. In the opening league match against Igor Gorgonzola Novara on 4 October 2026, Grozer produced 26 points, four blocks and two aces as UYBA pushed Novara to five sets. Lega Volley’s match report identified her as Busto’s leading scorer.

She followed with 15 points against Conegliano and had accumulated 69 points through UYBA’s first four league matches, making her the club’s top scorer entering the fifth round.

National Team Career

Youth International Breakthrough

Grozer was already producing major international numbers before joining Germany’s senior team. She appeared in CEV age-group competition as early as 2021 and was used mainly as an opposite during those first youth tournaments.

The 2022 U17 European Championship became the clearest early marker of her scoring potential. Germany won bronze, while Grozer’s 217 points led the entire tournament. The performance earned her the Best Opposite award in the official Dream Team.

Her role gradually shifted as she progressed. Later youth and senior records list Grozer primarily as an outside hitter, adding reception responsibilities to the high-volume attacking role she had handled as an opposite.

Senior Germany Debut at 16

Grozer entered Germany’s senior setup exceptionally early. National-team coach Vital Heynen included the 16-year-old in the expanded 2023 Volleyball Nations League squad after she impressed during a training camp earlier that year.

Her debut came during Germany’s VNL match against the Dominican Republic in Suwon, South Korea, in June 2023. Germany won 3–1, and Grozer described the appearance as a major honor. She was still only 16, making the step from youth international volleyball to senior competition in the same year she was preparing to begin her first Bundesliga season.

She remained in the senior national-team picture while continuing to play age-group volleyball. By October 2026, Germany’s federation credited Grozer with 37 senior international appearances and listed her as number 18 in the current women’s national-team pool.

From VNL Development to a Major 2026 Role

Grozer’s workload with Germany increased significantly in 2026. Volleyball World’s VNL statistics recorded 105 points across eight matches, including 92 attack points, six blocks and seven aces. Her 42.2% attacking efficiency reflected a player being trusted with substantial scoring responsibility despite being only 19.

EuroVolley 2026 then delivered her most prominent senior international performance to date.

Germany had an uneven start to the tournament but improved through the pool stage before meeting Belgium in the round of 16. The match went five sets, and Grozer produced 28 points, including 14 across the fourth set and tiebreak alone.

CEV described her as Germany’s standout player as the team won 3–2 and reached its first EuroVolley quarterfinal in seven years. Grozer scored nine points in the fourth set and another five in the deciding set.

Germany’s run ended with a 3–1 quarterfinal defeat to hosts Türkiye, but the tournament established Grozer as more than a young player receiving developmental minutes. At 19, she had already become one of Germany’s principal attacking options in a knockout match at a major senior championship.

Playing Style & Strengths

Grozer’s game is built around a combination of attacking power, a pressure-oriented jump serve and the continuing development of her six-rotation skills. She began her international youth career as an opposite, which placed much of the emphasis on terminal attacking, before transitioning toward outside hitter and taking on a larger reception role.

That background remains visible in how she scores. UYBA describes Grozer as an explosive attacker with a powerful jump serve, while her first Serie A1 match provided an immediate example of her ability to produce points through several phases: the 26-point performance against Novara included four blocks and two aces in addition to her attack scoring.

Her serving has also been a recurring point of emphasis in Germany. Volleyball Bundesliga reporting highlighted her ability to create pressure from the service line during her Schwerin years, and her 2026 VNL record included seven aces across eight appearances.

The transition from youth opposite to senior outside hitter is important because reception has become one of the skills Grozer herself identifies as central to her development. In her CEV Champions League interview, she spoke about stabilizing her passing while also making her attack more intelligent — finding sharper angles, varying solutions and making better choices against high-level blocks.

Her 183 cm height is not unusually large for an international outside hitter, so much of her attacking value comes from jump ability, speed into the approach and aggressive arm action. Schwerin specifically praised her jumping ability and powerful attacking during her development there.

Grozer also plays with visible emotion. Both club and international reporting have noted the energy she brings to rallies, and she has described emotional contribution as part of how she wants to help a team. At EuroVolley 2026, that quality was paired with a high-volume scoring role rather than existing only as an intangible: when Germany needed a fifth-set response against Belgium, Grozer remained the primary attacking reference and finished with 28 points.

Family & Personal Life

The Grozer name has been connected with German and European volleyball across several generations. Leana’s father, Georg Grozer, has been one of Germany’s most prominent men’s national-team players, while her grandfather Georg Grozer senior also played internationally. Growing up around training halls, matches and professional travel meant that Leana encountered the sport long before her own competitive career began.

She has spoken positively about that inheritance rather than presenting the family name as a burden. In 2024, Grozer said she viewed the name as an honor and remained in regular contact with her father for advice on both volleyball and life outside the sport.

Her father’s advice also appears in the way she talks about pressure. In a 2025 CEV feature, Grozer recalled lessons centered on keeping enjoyment in the sport, staying herself and finding a way to contribute to the team even when her own game is not going perfectly.

UYBA’s player profile gives a similar picture away from competition. Grozer describes herself as someone who brings energy to teammates on court and, away from volleyball, enjoys spending time with friends and family and being open to spontaneous plans. She also names her father as her main sporting inspiration while identifying Brazil’s Gabi as a women’s player she enjoys watching for her all-around responsibility and complete skill set.

Where Is Leana Grozer Playing Now?

As of October 2026, Leana Grozer plays for Laica Cioccolato UYBA Busto Arsizio in Italy’s Serie A1. She wears number 19 and is registered as an outside hitter.

The transfer represents her first full professional club season outside Germany. UYBA secured her signing in April 2026 after three seasons with SSC Palmberg Schwerin, and she entered the Italian league carrying a larger reputation than when she first reached the Bundesliga: a German championship, Champions League experience and an established senior national-team role were already part of her résumé.

Her opening month in Serie A1 has also shown that UYBA intends to use her as a major scorer. She opened the regular season with 26 points against Novara, followed with 15 against defending European power Conegliano, and reached 69 points through her first four league appearances. Going into the fifth round, she was UYBA’s leading scorer and among the leading individual scorers in Serie A1.

Grozer started again against Vero Volley Milano on 24 October, although UYBA lost the match 3–0. Her next stage is therefore less about earning a place in senior volleyball than adapting her scoring and reception game to the week-to-week demands of Serie A1.

She also remains part of the Germany women’s national-team core. The DVV’s October 2026 roster lists her with 37 senior caps and her new Italian club, while her EuroVolley performance has strengthened her position as one of the younger attackers around whom Germany can continue building.
